Main Event – Justin Gaethje vs. Tony Ferguson Preview
With a combined record of 46-5, the title fight for the interim belt features two of the best fighters in the Lightweight class.
Tony Ferguson enters as the favourite in the fight, riding a 12-fight winning streak, stretching back to October 2013. Gaethje enters the fight with three-consecutive first-round knockouts.
This fight comes down to Ferguson’s track record in the UFC against Gaethje’s hunger to finally get a title fight. Ferguson owes an impressive resume, betting plenty of the top lightweights (including two fighters on this card).
Gaethje, in a dense and deep division, has been waiting his turn for a title fight, giving him the motivation to prove to doubters he should not have been passed over before.
While both fighters bring knockout capabilities to the octagon, Ferguson offers a more. Ferguson’s won roughly a third of his matches by submission.
Gaethje also absorbs more hits than most fighters, which bodes well for Ferguson who can change fighting styles to match his opponent. Overall, Ferguson is a worthy favourite and worth betting will win against Gaethje at UFC 249.
Pick: Tony Ferguson to Win (-185)
Most Valuable Bets on UFC 249
With a full fight card and prelims, there is no shortage of betting options available on UFC 249. Below are some of the best value UFC 249 odds open for betting in Canada.
Cruz vs. Cejudo Total Rounds
The next biggest fight on the UFC 249 card is between Henry Cejudo and Dominick Cruz for the Bantamweight title.
Although current champion Henry Cejudo and Dominick Cruz fight at only 135lbs, both fighters can pack a punch. The two have combined for 15 victories by KO or TKO in their MMA careers (with some knockouts coming at the even lighter flyweight class), including Cejudo’s last two victories.
The potential knockout abilities of each fighter are amplified by the fact this is a five-round fight. The extra time equates more strikes and a higher likelihood one of those strikes will ends the fight, which is why betting the fight will end at under 4.5 rounds is a good wager.
Pick: Under 4.5 +155
Cerrone vs. Pettis Method of Victory
Anthony Pettis opens as the favourite against Donald Cerrone in their upcoming fight at UFC 249. Cerrone, once a highly touted fighter in the UFC, is in the midst of a career downturn.
Dating back to January 2017, Cerrone is only 4-8 and currently riding a three-fight losing streak. Cerrone recently admitted his lack of desire in his recent bout against Conor McGregor at UFC 246 (a fight which lasted a total of 40 seconds).
While Cerrone is not hesitant to enter his match at UFC 249, it cannot instill faith in bettors that a 37-year-old fighter with a winning percentage of 33% in his last 12 fights regrets his last fight.
Add in Anthony Pettis is a talented fighter in his own right, betting on Cerrone is a waste of time. Take Pettis to win the fight.
Pick: Anthony Pettis by KO, TKO or Disqualification +250
Hardy vs. De Castro Round and Winner
One combination style bet on UFC 249 offering some juicy odds is the round and fighter that will win the bout between Greg Hardy and Yorgan De Castro.
Hardy is the favourite in this match at -190, but bettors will find some attractive odds when betting on Hardy and the round he will win the fight.
Hardy has shown promise early in his MMA career. Since starting in Dana White’s Contender Series, Hardy is 5-1-1 with one disqualification. All five of his victories have come by KO or TKO in the first round. While the odds of him winning in the first round still offer value at +275, the competition he faces now is higher than it was in his first few fights.
Yorgan De Castro (5-0) represents the aforementioned “higher level of competition.” However, Hardy holds enough advantages over De Castro, especially in reach and leg reach, that he should be able to win the fight. Expect De Castro to keep it interesting though in the first round before Hardy lands his big shots in the second to win the fight.
Pick: Greg Hardy to win in the Second Round (+550)
