UFC 237 Fight Previews and Betting Picks
While there is only one title fight on the main card, there are plenty of great matches (featuring a few Brazilians) to get bettors and fans excited. Previewing the best fights and bets to make on UFC 237.
Main Event Rose Namajunas vs. Jessica Andrade
Rose Namajunas makes her triumphant return to the octagon, after a year off to recover from spinal stenosis. UFC odds have the woman’s strawweight champion (+110) as an underdog to Jessica Andrade (-145). The lengthy time off is one of the reasons for Namajunas status as an underdog. Andrade has the advantage of fighting in her home country of Brazil (while this is Namajunas first fight outside the United States).
Namajunas does have some advantages over Andrade. Namajunas has three inches in reach on Andrade and 4.5-inch longer leg reach. Namajunas needs to use her size to keep Andrade at a distance. Andrade is a swift and elusive fighter. She lands almost twice as many strikes as Namajunas and owns a higher percentage of her strikes being significant. The fact Namajunas missed a year of fighting may have her a step slow in this fight. Against a grappler/submission style fighter, she would have a better chance of defending her title. However, against Andrade, Namajunas will likely struggle on Saturday night.
Pick: Jessica Andrade (-145) to win the Women’s Strawweight title
Anderson Silva vs. Jared Cannonier
The next biggest fight at UFC 237 is between Anderson Silva and Jared Cannonier. Despite being 44 and having only one fight since February 2017 (a loss by unanimous decision to Israel Adesanya at UFC 234), UFC Vegas odds have Anderson as a very small underdog, opening at +115. While Cannonier is by no means a legend in the UFC (only 2-3 over his last five fights), Anderson has not shown much in the octagon over the previous six years. Since UFC 162, Silva is 1-5 with one no contest.
Cannonier most significant advantage over Silva is his defence. Cannonier does not take many strikes, which will help him in the event the fight goes the distance (Silva’s last five fights have all gone the distance). If Silva was about five years younger, he might have a chance to pull off the upset. However, the smart money on Saturday is on Jared Cannonier.
Pick: Jared Cannonier (-150) to Win
Jose Aldo vs. Alexander Volkanovski
Brazil’s first son makes his return home on Saturday, where he faces Alexander Volkanovski UFC 237 odds have Aldo as a very slight favourite at -130. Aldo is coming off consecutive performances of the night fights and looks closer championship form (something he lost when Conor McGregor knocked him out in 13 seconds at UFC 194).
While Aldo is looking great going into the fight, Volkanovski is the better fighter right now. Volkanovski is 6-0 in his UFC career (and 19-1 overall in his MMA career). The Australian fighter melds a dangerous combination of striking and grappling. His abilities to utility two styles will help him against Aldo (who has superb takedown defence but is closer to average defending strikes). Overall, as a small underdog, Volkanovski is worth a wager on Saturday.
Pick: Alexander Volkanovski (+100) to Win
