Preakness Stakes 2018 Preview and Predictions
Kentucky Derby Winners and the Preakness Stakes
Dating back to 1919, the first year a horse won the Triple Crown, 35 horses in total have won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. Of the 35 winners of both, 23 horses would not win or participate in the Belmont Stakes.
Many of the winners of both events have occurred in the last quarter century. Ten horses since 1993 have won the Kentucky Derby and then the Preakness Stakes. Only American Pharaoh in 2015 would go on to complete the Triple Crown.
Preakness Stakes Odds
The field at the Preakness Stakes is much smaller than the Kentucky Derby (13 horses compared to 20 at the Derby). Because of the smaller field, the opening lines entering the tournament look much different than the opening lines at the Kentucky Derby.
Sports Interaction has Justify locked in as the favourite to win the race, followed by Good Magic (who came second in the Kentucky Derby) and Bolt Doro who was +1100 to win in Louisville. The biggest underdogs at Preakness are listed at +3300 to win. Seven horses at the Kentucky Derby had their odds of winning listed between +3400 and +9900.
Best Horse to Win
After a gutsy win in the mud at the Kentucky Derby, Justify is the best horse to wager will win the Preakness Stakes. Justify was the favourite at the Kentucky Derby, but with a slightly thinner field at the Preakness, the odds for Justify to win are substantially different (+343 to win the Derby, compared to -252 to win the Preakness Stakes).
There is still some competition, especially from Good Magic (more on him later) and maybe even Telekinesis. However, it is hard to bet against Justify after his strong showing at the Kentucky Derby and the historical success of Derby winners entering the Preakness Stakes.
Best Underdog to Place
If not for some lousy weather, Good Magic may have upset Justify and won the Kentucky Derby. Good Magic entered the Derby with the fifth-best odds of winning. He finished second in the race. His strong performance has him listed as the biggest threat to beat Justify at the Preakness. Good Magic may once again fall to Justify in the race. However, betting on the top-three finish is a good strategy as he is the second best horse in the race.
The biggest underdog getting notable buzz entering the race is Telekinesis. Although he did not participate in the Kentucky Derby, Telekinesis has a good record in his career. The three-year-old colt has finished in the top three of his three races this year, including a first-place finish at the Fair Grounds in February. Betting on a first three finishes offers a payout of +400. At those odds, even if Justify and Good Magic fail to win or place, a profit is still achievable.
