AFC Championship Preview

The first game of Championship Sunday features the Kansas City Chiefs (13-4) and the Tennessee Titans (11-7). The Titans have surprised many, pulling off two big upsets to make their first AFC Championship game since 2002. The Chiefs are in their second straight AFC Championship game, losing last year in overtime to the Patriots. The Kansas City Chiefs open as the favourite on NFL playoffs betting odds.

The Titans have recent success against Kansas City, winning four straight games, with three of the games coming in Kansas City.

The Chiefs will need to stop Derrick Henry if they want to advance to their first Super Bowl in over 50 years. Henry has gashed defences this postseason, averaging over a 185 yards per game. However, this is not the first time Henry has had success in the postseason.

Henry’s first career playoff game came against the Chiefs. In that game, Henry galloped to 156 on just 24 carries, helping lead the way for the Tennessee upset (the Titans were 8.5-point underdogs in that game). Henry also blew the doors off the Chiefs defence earlier this season, running for 188 yards and two scores.

The Chiefs defence has been one of the worst at stopping the run all season.

The Chiefs will need their offence to compensate for any weaknesses in their defence. That should not be a problem after watching the team explode for touchdowns on seven straight drives last week. Mahomes, who healthy and with his full cast of weapons, looks like the best quarterback in the NFL. He will cause problems for the Titans as he did in the first meeting between these two teams (446 passing yards and three TDs).

Bettors should expect a tight game on Sunday between these two clubs. While an upset is possible, with how great Derrick Henry is playing, Mahomes and the Chiefs will not let up if they get down early. However, the Titans limiting processions for the Chiefs should make it a close game, with the points on the Titans the best bet.

Pick: Tennessee Titans +7.5 (-110)

NFC Championship Preview

The top two seeds in the NFC square off in the second NFL playoff game on Sunday, with San Francisco (14-3) hosting the Green Bay Packers (14-3). Vegas odds have the 49ers as the favourites to win on Sunday. The 49ers walloped the Packers earlier in the season, 37-8, limiting the Packers to only 81 passing yards.

The 49ers enter this game with arguably the best defence in the NFL. They led the league in passing yards allowed and yards per play. They have a great defensive line, capable of generating pressure when only rushing four.

The Packers will need their best from Aaron Rodgers and Aaron Jones to keep this game interesting. Rodgers was shut down in the first meeting, throwing a career-low in yards (when playing a full game). Since the loss, the Packers are undefeated, but Rodgers has not looked as potent as he has in previous seasons. Rodgers has not completed over 66% of his passes in a game this season since Week 8.

Rodgers needs to do more if the Packers are to win. The 49ers have one of the best ground attacks in the NFL and will limit the Packers’ offensive chances. The Packers defence has also done the team little help stopping the run. The Packers ranked in the bottom third against the run this season.

Even if the 49ers quarterback is shaky on Sunday, the 49ers’ talent elsewhere to make up for his shortcomings, something the Packers cannot say about their team. Take the San Francisco 49ers to win and cover on Sunday.

Pick: San Francisco +7.5 (-104)
