MLB 2019 Playoffs Odds and Picks

MLB 2019 Playoffs Odds and Picks

As the MLB regular season concludes, 10 franchises gear up for more baseball in October and their chance at a spot in the baseball record books. With home run at an all-time, Moneyball teams back in the playoffs, and plenty of young stars, baseball fans across North American should expect ta thrilling October. The playoffs start on Tuesday and Wednesday with the Wild Card games, which are opening for betting as well as World Series futures.

Below are the MLB betting odds for each team to win the 2019 World Series.

  • Houston Astros +210
  • Los Angeles Dodgers +300
  • New York Yankees +425
  • Atlanta Braves +750
  • Minnesota Twins +1300
  • Washington Nationals +1600
  • Oakland Athletics +1700
  • Tampa Bay Rays +2000
  • Milwaukee Brewers +2200

American League Predictions

Below are our picks for the American League Wild Card game and the ALDS series with odds open for betting.

Oakland Athletics vs. Tampa Bay Rays Wild Card Game Pick

Arguably the best two pitching team in the American League clash for a chance to play the Houston Astros in the ALDS.

The Tampa Bay Rays and Oakland A’s Moneyball approach paid dividends this year, as both teams won over 95 games and ranked in the top-five for team ERA.

While Tampa Bay’s pitching staff has a slight advantage, Oakland’s hitters make up for it and more. Oakland’s shortstop Marcus Semien paced the team with 83 extra-base hits, turning himself into one of the best hitting shortstops in baseball.

Semien is joined by Chapman and Olsen with over 30 home runs for Oakland. The Rays only had one player, Austin Meadows, hit over 30 home runs.

Tampa Bay’s occasionally approach of starting a reliever is also something bettors should consider. While it has worked in the regular season, how it pans out in a single-elimination playoff game remains unseen.

Overall, hitting and home-field advantage is why the Oakland Athletics are the better bet to win and face Houston in the ALDS.

Pick: Oakland Athletics (-150) to Win

New York Yankees vs. Minnesota Twins Series Pick

While the New York Yankees may have the bigger names in the MLB world, it was the Minnesota Twins who bashed their way to an MLB record 307 home runs in 2019. That total helped the Twins win over 100 games for the first time since 1965.

That total could spell doom for the Yankees, whose pitching staff allowed the seventh-most home runs in the MLB this season, compared to the Twins who ranked second in the American League, giving up only 197 (51 less than New York).

While the Yankees have home-field advantage and the better bullpen, the first point could be moot, as the park favours home run hitters.

The Twins became the first team in MLB history to have five players hit over 30 home runs in a season, meaning on any given night someone in their lineup can go off. Looking at the Vegas MLB playoff odds on Twins makes them worth a wager to win as underdogs.

Pick: Minnesota Twins (+205) to win the Series

National League Predictions

Below are our picks for the National League Wild Card game and the NLDS series with odds open for betting.

Washington Nationals vs. Milwaukee Brewers Wild Card Pick

Maybe the two most surprising teams to make the postseason in 2019, square off in the National League Wild Card game on Tuesday night.

The Brewers overcame an injury to Christian Yelich, the reigning NL MVP, to return to the postseason, while the Nationals return to the playoffs despite Bryce Harper leaving for the Phillies last season.

While the Brewers have fared well without Yelich, this game is one where they need the reigning MVP. The Nationals should march Max Scherzer to the mound against Milwaukee.

A strikeout machine, Scherzer can test the Brewers without worrying about Yelich looming.

If Yelich somehow made it back for this game, the Brewers would have a better chance. However, without him and against arguably the most dominating pitcher the last five years, the Nationals are the better pick to win.

Pick: Washington Nationals (-150) to Win

Atlanta Braves vs. St. Louis Cardinals NLDS Pick

After a hot September, the St. Louis Cardinals return to the playoffs to take on the Atlanta Braves. While the Braves are the younger and less experienced team, after watching them last postseason and seeing their improvements this year, no one should believe they lack the gusto to smack around the Cardinals.

The Braves have possibly the best young player in baseball. Ronald Acuna Jr. brings everything to the table. He has power, speed, a cannon of an arm and good plate vision.

Acuna is joined by Freddie Freeman to form maybe the most potent 1-2 combination in the playoffs this year.

While the pitching advantage goes to St. Louis, the difference between the two teams is minor. St. Louis ranked fifth in team ERA this season, while Atlanta was only three spots behind at eighth. Both teams allowed the same slugging percentage over the season and off by two in total walks allowed.

While the Cardinals are one of the best organizations and a perennial contender, the Braves are the better team and with the experience of last year, ready to take the next step and make the NLCS.

Pick: Atlanta Braves (-160) to win Series

World Series Prediction

With MLB playoff odds 2019 at their highest at the start of the postseason, early October is a good time to lay some money on a World Series winner. Entering the playoffs, the best team to bet to win the World Series is the MLB playoff odds favourites – the Houston Astros.

The Astros look better than they did in 2017 when they won the World Series. They have the best three pitcher combination in the playoffs and a lineup that can match anyone in the playoffs.

Pick: Houston Astros (+210) to Win the World Series
