Duke enters the final weeks before March Madness begins as a heavy favourite. Of course, their spot atop the odds is under the assumption Zion Williamson returns from injury and plays in the tournament. Whether Zion is fully healthy in a month and even opts to play is still a question. However, the competitive nature of the presumptive first overall pick this year should see him return to the play for the Blue Devils, meaning should enter the tournament as the favourite.
March Madness 2019 Picks and Predictions
Leading into the NCAA March Madness, the best bet is to win everything is Duke. Along with Zion Williamson, Duke has two more potential top-five NBA picks in R.J. Barrett and Cam Reddish. The three stars have helped Duke reach the number one spot in the NCAA rankings (as of February 24) and atop the March Madness Futures list.
Duke’s only real drawback is their lack of depth. Outside of Duke’s starting five, their team is not very good. Look at what happened when Williamson left with an injury 35 seconds into their game against North Carolina. The Tar Heels pulled off a 16-point victory on the road. However, as bad a loss as that is, it was under some extenuating circumstances. Duke won their next game without Williamson (avenging an earlier season loss to the Syracuse) and have time to get ready for the tournament. Even without Williamson, Duke’s remaining starting lineup (R.J. Barrett is averaging 0.3 points more than Zion this season) and coaching will make them stay close to the top of the odds.
Pick: Duke (+190) to Win the National Championship
Best Non-Duke School to Win the National Championship
Of other teams with a chance to win the National Championship in 2019, one college program not to overlook is the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The Red Raiders this year are similar to last year’s champions Villanova. Texas Tech top players are all upperclassmen (ranging from sophomores to red-shirt seniors) who play great defence (their defence ranks second in the entire NCAA, allowing only 57.4 points per game). They have shown this season that they can keep up quality teams. They recently blew out Kansas by 29 and only lost to a fully healthy Duke team by nine at a neutral site. In terms of value, few teams are offering better than the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Pick: Texas Tech (+4000) to Win National Championship
