CFL Betting Facts

  • Calgary Stampeders open CFL betting odds as the favourite for the fifth straight year.
  • Montreal Alouettes were the best team against the spread in 2018 (11-7).
  • B.C. Lions most unders in the CFL at 5-11-2.
  • Winnipeg Blue Bombers most overs at 11-7.
  • No team won more than six road games and seven home games.

Grey Cup Betting odds

Odds for all nine Canadian Football League Teams to win the 2019 Grey Cup

  • Calgary Stampeders +269
  • B.C. Lions +302
  • Winnipeg Blue Bombers +456
  • Hamilton Tiger-Cats +559
  • Saskatchewan Roughriders +746
  • Ottawa Red Blacks +900
  • Toronto Argonauts +1100
  • Edmonton Eskimos +1200
  • Montreal Alouettes +1900

As the 2019 CFL season begins, one trend continues, the Calgary Stampeders opening as the favourite to win the Grey Cup. The Stampeders have won at least 13 games for six straight years. Over that stretch, the Stamps have made four Grey Cup and won two (2014 and 2018).

The constant for the Stampeders over their run of excellence is Bo Levi Mitchell. Mitchell took over starting quarterback duties in 2014, and since 2016 he has been arguably the best quarterback in the CFL.

There was some doubt he would return to Calgary this season (as he explored opportunities in the National Football League). However, those doubts were squashed when Mitchell re-signed with Calgary in February for $2.8 million over four years.

The Stampeders biggest competition this season comes from the B.C. Lions. The Lions stole away quarterback Mike Reilly from the Edmonton Eskimos in the offseason. Reilly gives the Lions stability and experience at quarterback.

While the Lions have fixed their quarterbacking woes, questions still swirl around their defence. The Lions allowed the most points of any playoff team last season (110 more than the Stampeders allowed).

The Lions did spend three of their first picks in the CFL draft on defence. However, it will take more than a few rookies for bettors to feel confident picking the Lions over the Stampeders to win the 2019 Grey Cup.

Pick: Calgary Stampeders to Win 2019 Grey Cup +293

CFL Division Winner Odds

Below are the odds of each team winning their division in 2019.

West Division Winner Odds

  • Calgary Stampeders +125
  • B.C. Lions +250
  • Winnipeg Blue Bombers +375
  • Saskatchewan Roughriders +575
  • Edmonton Oilers +800

East Divisions Winner Odds

  • Hamilton Tiger-Cats +123
  • Ottawa Redblacks +187
  • Toronto Argonauts +373
  • Montreal Alouettes +456

Of all nine teams in the CFL, the team offering the best value to win their division is the Toronto Argonauts. The Argonauts are only two years removed from a Grey Cup win.

They started last season playing well before starting quarterback Ricky Ray went down with a neck injury (which was a contributing factor in the QB retiring from the CFL).

James Franklin takes over full-time starting quarterback duties for Argonauts in 2019. Franklin started six games for the Argonauts last season. Franklin showed flashes in his first season with the Argonauts but eventually lost the starting role.

Now with four seasons of experiences (seven starts), Franklin comes into this season with the necessary experience to start in the CFL.

Franklin has played excellent in exhibition games. He has been leading the offence efficiently while showing big play capabilities. If he can continue his strong play into the regular season and considering it only takes 10 or 11 games to win the East, the Argonauts are worth a wager at +373 to win their second Division title in three years.

Pick: Toronto Argonauts to Win East Division (+373)

Betting Tips for the 2019 CFL Season

While betting on the CFL is no exact science, there are some strategies to employ to have greater success. We have the best ones below for the 2019 CFL season.

Betting on Road Underdogs

One approach that was successful in 2018 when making CFL picks against the spread was betting on the road underdog. Last year, the Montreal Alouettes were arguably the worst team in the CFL.

They went through multiple quarterbacks, struggled to score points and won last than a quarter of their games. Online sportsbooks were well aware of their shortcomings, making them moderate to substantial underdogs when playing on the road.

While the Montreal Alouettes did not win much on the road, they were damn good against the spread. Montreal ended the 2018 CFL season 7-2 ATS on the road, the best mark in the CFL.

It will take a few games for this season’s Montreal to emerge (and for lines to adjust to make it worth betting), but once they do bet that team ATS as road underdogs.

Early prediction: Edmonton Eskimos to struggle in 2019 overall but perform well against the spread.

Sticking with the Under

Even though the CFL is known for its pass-heavy style of offence and a higher rate of special teams touchdowns than the NFL, most games in the season go under. In 2018, only a third of the league had a higher number of their games finish hitting the over than the under.

Online sportsbooks like to set game total lines on the higher side. Focus on betting more unders to win a higher percentage of over/under bets.
