CFL 2019 Futures

CFL 2019 Futures
The defeating champions, the Calgary Stampeders, open as the favourite. However, after some quarterback shuffling this offseason, a few teams are not too far off of catching Calgary in 2019. Of course, consistency is key, making our pick to win the Grey Cup a team that retained their quarterback from last season.

As free agents in the Canadian Football League winds to a crawl, now is a great time to check on Grey Cup Futures for 2019.

CFL Facts and Stats for the 2019 Season

  • Calgary Stampeders won at least 13 games for six straight seasons
  • West teams won four of the last six Grey Cups
  • Winnipeg and Hamilton only two teams not to win a Grey Cup this century
  • No playoff-crossover team has ever made a Grey Cup
  • Grey Cup scheduled for November 24 this year in Calgary

2019 CFL Grey Cup Futures

Below are the odds for every team winning the Grey Cup entering the 2019 CFL season. The odds should remain relatively constant (barring some quarterback leaving the CFL for the NFL) until the CFL schedule kickoffs on June 13 in Hamilton.

  • Calgary Stampeders +277
  • BC Lions +289
  • Winnipeg Blue Bombers +490
  • Hamilton Tiger-Cats +561
  • Saskatchewan Roughriders +731
  • Ottawa Red Blacks +900
  • Edmonton Eskimos +1100
  • Toronto Argonauts +1400
  • Montreal Alouettes +1400

The Calgary Stampeders enter the 2019 Canadian Football League season as the favourites to win the Grey Cup. This marks the fourth straight season CFL odds have the Calgary Stampeders as the favourite at the start of the season. A busy offseason sees the BC Lions climb up to second on 2019 Grey Cup futures. The Lions missed were blown out in the playoffs last year by Hamilton.

As is the case in the Canadian Football League over the last decade, Western Conference teams are getting much more love from the Canadian online sportsbooks. Hamilton leads all Eastern Conference teams at +561 to win the Grey Cup. Ottawa comes in at +900, which is a good value considering they have made three of the last four Grey Cup (winning it all in 2016).

Rounding out 2019 Grey Cup futures are the three teams that missed the playoffs in 2018. Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton went a combined 18-36 last season (5-22 on the road) to finish at the bottom of the CFL standings.

Best Bet to Win the 2019 Grey Cup

With the best quarterback and defence in the CFL, it makes sense to pick the Calgary Stampeders to repeat as Grey Cup champions. However, when making CFL picks, finding some value is a better strategy, as any team has a realistic chance at winning the Grey Cup (due to the size of the league).

One team that looked like a good pick after the 2018 CFL season ended was the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Roughriders won 12 games in 2018. If they had more consistent quarterback play, they could have won it all last season. The Riders entered free agency looking to grab one of the top quarterbacks on the market. However, the Riders failed to sign anyone, which is why they sit at +700 odds to win the Grey Cup in 2019.

Where Canadian bettors can find some value is betting on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to win the 2019 Grey Cup. Winnipeg is coming off a 22-14 loss to the Stampeders in the West Finals. However, they have shown continual improvement over the last three seasons. The Blue Bombers led the CFL in points scored last season and finished second in point differential to Calgary.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers did not make many splashes this offseason, focusing more on depth, improving some holes on defence and keeping their group together. That will benefit Blue Bombers quarterback Matt Nichols. Nichols is entering prime quarterback years. If he can stay healthy, he has a shot at winning the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player award and helping the Blue Bombers win their first Grey Cup in nearly three decades.

Pick: Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+490) to Win the 2019 Grey Cup
