UFC 262 Betting Preview

UFC 262 Betting Preview
Texas plays host for UFC 262, headlined by Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler clashing for the vacant Lightweight Championship.

On May 15, the UFC returns to Houston for the first time since UFC 247. The pay-per-view is headlined by a fight between Charlies Oliveira and Michael Chandler for the Lightweight Championship. The rest of the main card features plenty of notable fighters. Find who we think will win in our UFC 262 betting preview below.

Main Event: Charles Oliveira vs. Michael Chandler

Following Khabib Nurmagomedov's retirement after beating Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 – the Lightweight Belt has been unclaimed – until now. Charles Oliveira will face Michael Chandler in the main event at UFC 262 – with both fighters looking to win their first UFC title belt.

Chandler is a newcomer to the UFC – beating Dan Hooker by TKO in his debut at UFC 257. Chandler spent much of his MMA career fighting in Bellator. During his tenure in Bellator, Chandler set multiple records, including most title reigns (three) and most title fights (11).

On the other side of the Octagon is Oliveira – a long-time veteran of the UFC. Oliveira made his debut in August 2010 – on a card headlined by Jon Jones broadcast on Versus (a subsidiary of NBC Sports). Nearly eleven years later, and the UFC record for wins by submission (14), Oliveira finally gets a shot at the title.

The betting odds on this fight suggest a close fight – and we agree.

Oliveira is on a tear right now. After trading wins and losses from 2015 to 2018, Oliveira is undefeated. His eight consecutive victories – dating back to UFC 225 – is one shy of tying the tenth longest in the sport's history. Most impressive, Oliveira is winning fights through multiple methods (two knockouts and a decision during the streak).

Chandler is a great wrestler with plenty of power. He can win fights through almost any method. However, his success against black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is spotty. All three of his losses as Bellator Lightweight Champion were against black belts in BJJ. Oliveira is a third-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Oliveira is also great at uses an opponent's power against them. Chandler could get Oliveira to the ground, but Oliveira's countering skills make winning the fight even more difficult for Chandler. Bet on Oliveira – after eleven years in the UFC – winning his first UFC Championship.

Pick: Charles Oliveira (1.80) to win the UFC Lightweight Championship

Tony Ferguson vs. Beneil Dariush

Tony Ferguson2.251.65Beneil Dariush

Tony Ferguson and Bebeil Dariush – two more lightweights on the card – square off on Saturday in what is a crucial fight for both fighters. Ferguson has dropped his last two fights – and a third loss would likely end his hopes of ever getting another shot at the title. Dariush is on a six=fight winning streak – and a seventh would move him into the conversation for a title fight.

Dariush is preparing for this fight well – assuming the Tony Ferguson he will face on Saturday is still a top contender. Dariush's preparation for the fight is not the only reason we think he will win.

Dariush matches up well against Ferguson. While Ferguson is the longer fighter, Dariush will make it a tight fight and use his BJJ skills to take it to the mat. Ferguson's skills on the ground and in close quarters have diminished. Bet on Beneil to win the fight.

Pick: Benil Dariush (1.65) to Win the Fight

Nate Diaz vs. Leon Edwards

After a year and a half away from the Octagon, Nate Diaz makes his return at UFC 262. However, he is going to have a hard time returning to the win column against Leon Edwards. Edwards is the third-ranked welterweight and has not lost a fight since 2015. A win for Edwards all but guarantees his next fight will be against Kamaru Usman for the Welterweight Title.

Diaz is no longer the brawler he was in his prime. He still can absorb plenty of damage – but that does not help his chances of winning the fight. We are betting on Edwards to win the fight. Consider betting Edwards to win by decision when those fight props are available.

Pick: Leon Edwards (1.20) to Win the Fight

Katyln Chookagian vs. Viviane Araujo

Viviane Araujo2.151.69Katlyn Chookagian

The one underdog we are betting on at UFC 262 is Viviane Araujo. Araujo is 4-1 in her UFC career – winning her last two fights by unanimous decision. She is an excellent striker – landing 5.65 per minute. She is also an underrated defender – capable of absorbing strikes and avoiding takedowns.

Her opponent, Katlyn Chookagian, is a good fighter but has a few holes that Araujo can exploit. Expect this fight to go all three rounds, with Araujo picking up the win by decision.

Pick: Viviane Araujo (2.15) to Win the Fight
