Can the Toronto Blue Jays win the World Series?
As the MLB winds to a close, the Toronto Blue Jays find themselves in the thick of the postseason. The Toronto Blue Jays are a beneficiary of the expanded playoff format. Still, anyone who has followed the team this year knows the roster is oozing with young talent and quality pitching. The question though on the minds of fans and bettors alike is whether this young squad and go on an October run and win the franchise its third World Series.

A few hiccups lately have the Blue Jays not looking as sharp as the MLB postseason approaches. However, the team’s played well enough over the shortened season that teams will not look forward to playing them in the playoffs.
The issue for the Jays is putting together a monthlong run consistent enough to beat the best in baseball. The Jays have struggled to find reliable pitching outside Hyun Jin Ryu (4-1, 3.00 ERA). The addition of Taijun Walker has been a boost to their rotation – 1.56 ERA in 17.1 innings. However, that is a small sample size, and the rest of the Jays pitchers with at least four starts all have ERAs of 4.91 or more.
The addition of an MLB playoff bubble hurts the Jays. The Blue Jays have played their best in Buffalo. At “home” this season, the team ranks at or near the top in many offensive categories. On the road, those numbers peter out to average or below average.
While this season is crazy, and anything is possible, there are better teams to bet will win the World Series than the Toronto Blues Jays.
World Series Odds and Prediction
The top pick to win the 2020 World Series is the Los Angeles Dodgers. After back-to-back losses in the World Series (2017 & 2018) and a surprising upset to the Nationals in 2019, the Dodgers are poised to win their first title in over 30 years.
The team’s paced the MLB for much of the season with the best record. The addition of Mookie Betts – who was a pivotal part of the Boston Red Sox team that beat the Dodgers in the 2018 World Series – has paid dividends.
The starting pitching is also impressive this season. Three Dodgers starters own an ERA of 2.68 or lower, helping the Dodgers enter the final stretch of the 2020 MLB season as the only franchise with a sub-3.00 team ERA. A weird baseball season to get the best regular-season team of the last decade over the hump is what we are betting on.
Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers (+350) to Win the World Series
AL East and Exciting Division Finishes
With a dozen games left, most online sportsbooks – with odds still open – set their MLB betting odds to win the AL East heavily in favour of the Tampa Bay Rays. While the Rays lead in the Division in not insurmountable, betting on the Jays – or even the Yankees – to make up the difference down the stretch is not worth the value.
Pick: Tampa Bay Rays (-4000 to Win the AL East)
The MLB Division to watch down the stretch and consider wagering on is the AL Central.

The Minnesota Twins started the 2020 MLB leading everyone in the league with a record of 10-2. However, a month and a half of .500 baseball by the Twins and win streaks of six, and seven games by the Chicago White Sox have made the race to the finish a tight one in the AL Central.
The two teams play a very similar schedule to finish up the season – with both clubs playing series against the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs. The White Sox draw a tougher series to fill out the remainder of their schedule – four road games against the Cleveland Indians. The Twins play two almost the lowly Detroit Tigers.
The Twins are the reigning AL Central champs, while it has been over a decade since the Chicago White Sox have hung a division banner. There is some good value on the Minnesota Twins, especially if Nelson Cruz gets hot for a week.
Pick: Minnesota Twins (+250) to Win the AL Central
Could a Toronto Blue Jay Win the MVP?
Whether it is the team’s ability to hit in when playing in Buffalo, a lack of training camp for pitchers, or something, the 2020 MLB season is a fruitful one for the Blue Jays lineup. Teoscar Hernandez leads all Blue Jays hitters with a .996 (fourth in the American League), 14 home runs (fifth in the AL), and one of ten qualified players in the AL batting over .300.
The problem for Hernandez is he plays in the same league as Mike Trout and is sitting behind Jose Abreu in many (but not all) standard and advanced numbers.
Best Bet for AL MVP
The case for Abreu for MVP is a more interesting one than Trout. While Trout is once again playing like the best player in baseball, what Abreu has done for the White Sox should sway some voters.
Abreu, as of September 17, has the Chicago White Sox owning the best winning percentage in the American League. He is averaging an RBI per game (48 RBIs in 48 games), leads all AL batters in total bases and hits. His low walk rate is somewhat a concern, but as long as the White Sox are at or near the top of the American League, the rest of his 2020 season is enough to make him worth betting to win the AL MVP.
Pick: Jose Abreu (+550) to Win the 2020 AL MVP
