2022 Valero Texas Open Betting Advice

The next Valero Texas Open in San Antonio will mark the 100th anniversary of the famed PGA event (though, it’s moved locations plenty over that century). The festivities run from March 31 and April 3, and for bettors looking to join in on the fun, you’ll want to read this for expert 2022 Valero Open betting advice! Here’s what you need to know ahead of the upcoming competition!

Who Is Playing In The 2022 Valero Texas Open?

The playing field at the 2022 Valero Texas Open is far from set. In fact, it won’t become final until Friday, March 25 at 4:00 p.m. CT — the cutoff time to commit to the tournament. However, several big names have already said they’ll be participating in the event. The most notable names to commit are Corey Conners, Tony Finau, Rory McIlroy, and Jordan Spieth. Cause of the unknown playing field, Canada’s top sportsbooks have yet to release betting odds for it so we can only speculate on who’ll be favored:

Spieth is actually the reigning, defending champion. It was a triumphant win for the one-time PGA “golden boy”, who before Valero, hadn’t won a PGA event since 2017 — a drought that involved 83 events. Spieth shot rounds of 67, 70, 67, then a final-round 66 to claim the victory (and over $1 million winning purse). That performance means he’ll likely enter the 2022 event with one of the best betting lines to win.

We expect more big-name golfers to join the tournament in the weeks that follow. Here’s why: this will be the final tune-up before The Masters, which begins on April 7. Surely, some golfers will take the week off to prepare for the first major of the season, but others will want to stay in playing “rhythm” per se.

2022 Valero Texas Betting Picks

Without posted odds and a complete playing field, our Valero Texas betting picks are nothing more than “hunches” — e.g. early gut feelings about what could unfold. Nonetheless, we have opinions to share that could help you prepare for the 100th edition event, and in the end, win big bucks from betting on it. Here are the three golfers you should be watching very closely:

Jordan Spieth

We begin the current champion, Spieth. The No. 14 player in the world has proved his win in 2021 wasn’t a “fluke.” Over the past year, Speith has had six top-10 finishes and shown steady ball-striking improvement. Even at TPC San Antonio Oaks, he’s played well pre-2021. Back in 2015, he finished runner-up here too.

Here’s one more thing Spieth has going for him: the event is practically in his backyard. Of course, Spieth hails from Texas. Maybe not San Antonio, but the nearby Dallas. The friendly location, plus last year’s performance, should give Speith all the confidence to repeat as champion.

Rory McIlroy

One of the most surprising commitments for the Valero Texas Open was McIlroy. Surprising because it’ll be Rory's first appearance at the event in nearly a decade — he last competed in 2013. But boy, what a performance that was almost ten years ago. In 2013, McIlroy shot a final-round 66 to finish two shots behind champion Martin Laird. McIlroy said he’s participating so he could squeeze in one more stroke-play event before the Masters.

Historically speaking, the Valero Texas Open isn’t full of big names — so McIlroy’s presence will mean extra in 2022. He’s currently ranked No. 6 in the world, which is the highest of any player currently committed to the event. So it’s safe to say Rory might be the best player to suit up, which is never a bad betting proposition to align yourself with.

Corey Conners

To round out our betting choices, we’re choosing another one-time winner — Conners, who took first place back in 2019. Outside of that win, the Canadian has also partaken in the tourney two other times, finishing 26th in 2018 and 14th in 2021. He’s never missed the cut once in San Antonio.

Admittedly, Conners has had an up-and-down 2022 campaign. He’s competed in six events — missing the cut in half of them, but also finishing 11th in two competitions (the other resulted in 38th overall). Regardless, the talent is there, evident by his No. 42 world ranking. Conners could be a good “flyer” bet to take during this event.
