As Tampa Bay looks to close out the series with a sweep, the public money and historical betting data are pointing towards betting on Montreal to steal Game Four and avoid the sweep. The last Stanley Cup Finals ending in a sweep was 1997. Since then, all Finals have gone at least five games.

The three Stanley Cup Finals to last five games – 2007, 2014, and 2018 – all saw the home team win one game.

Another point that is undoubtedly sparking some conversation involves the Tampa Bay mayor. As the NHL bubble during the NHL playoffs last year forced Tampa Bay to play their entire postseason run in Canada, the mayor thinks the Lightning should lose Game Four in Montreal to win the Stanley Cup at home. While the sentiment is nice, most people will not agree with that decision.

Tampa Bay could be a little lower energy than Montreal – as the home crowd for a win, and you are the champions is as electric as they come.

Montreal is also desperate. Every game is win or go home for the Habs – meaning they should throw everything they got the Lightning on Monday. Is it enough to win Monday’s game? We would say yes. Is it enough to go on a four-game winning streak? That does not seem possible.

Goal Total – Over/Under 5.0

At 5.0 goals total for the game, we like to bet on the over. Since the Conference Finals (16 games worth of playoff hockey), 11 of 16 have feature five goals or more.

Five does seem to be the most frequent outcome – but with the chance for overtime, how good Tampa Bay’s offence looks, the Canadiens to score shorthanded, I would stick with the over and get at least your money back if it is a lower scoring game (2-2 going into overtime).

First Goal Scorer of the Game

A couple of options we can bet here, if we are looking at a Tampa Bay player to start the scoring and if we are looking at a Canadiens player to light up the goal first.

Tampa Bay Lightning Player: Steven Stamkos

Steven Stamkos is now in the midst of this best postseason run, with eight goals and 18 points in 21 games. While he has not been as deadly as Brayden Point, Point has cooled off a bit, failing to score in four straight games.

The other guy – Nikita Kucherov (more on him in a bit), is the better playmaker and more likely to pick up points through his passing and power-play skills than Stamkos, a top-tier goal-scoring threat when he is playing at his highest level.

Pick: Steven Stamkos (11.00) to Score the First Goal of the Game

Montreal Canadiens Player: Eric Staal

The group needs a veteran player to step up big time on Monday night – so we are looking at Eric Staal – who led the Carolina Hurricanes with 28 points when they won the 2006 Stanley Cup. Staal – who only has two goals – is scoring on 10.5% of his shoots,  meaning it is more opportunity hurting his scoring compares to ineffectiveness later in his career.

If there is one bet to make on every game this postseason, it is for Nikita Kucherov to pick up a point. The guy has been an absolute this postseason run – joining Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux as the only players in NHL history with back-to-back 30 point postseason.

We talked a lot about Kucherov in our Conference Finals betting preview – how he could become only the third player to score 40 points in a playoff. That seems unlikely now as the Stanley Cup Finals look like it will go only two more games.

However, he still has 32 points in 21 games – with at least one point in 16 games. He has five points against Montreal in three games (only a zero-point performance in Game Two). He just seems so unstoppable every time he steps foot on the ice.

The second period in each of the three 2021 Stanley Cup Finals games has been at least two goals – including three goals in goals two and three. It seems like the offence gets in a rhythm by the second frame, and we are expecting a similar result on Monday.

The hockey betting odds on two goals or 3+ goals are favourable, as you can bet on both options. We are leaning two goals in the second period – as Montreal needs Price to do more if they are to win.
