2021 Queen's Plate Picks

The 2021 Queen’s Plate, the most exciting race of the Canadian horse racing year, will be run at Woodbine Racetrack on Saturday, August 22. The race is the first jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown, and one of the most important horse races of the year. It drew a field of 13 of the best Canadian-bred three-year-olds, and the stakes are high.

They will run a mile and a quarter on Woodbine’s Tapeta main track. To the winner go the lion’s share of a $1,000,000 purse, a place in Canadian horse racing history, and continued hopes of being the first horse since Wando in 2003 to win the Canadian Triple Crown.

The Triple Crown continues with the Prince of Wales Stakes on the Fort Erie dirt course on September 14, and finishes with the Breeders’ Stakes over the grass at Woodbine on October 3.

Queen's Plate Handicapping

#6 Munnyfor Ro is the horse to beat in the 2021 Queen’s plate. Last time out she won the Woodbine Oaks, a testament to her strong current form, and she keeps one of the top riders in the colony, Justin Stein. Though she is facing males for the first time, fillies have historically done well in the Queen’s Plate, and she is moving forward with distance.

Munnyfor Ro is a late runner, and that kind of trip should suit the race. Even though she comes on late, she has not needed a complete collapse to run a winning race. Most of the field likes being close to the pace, meaning there will be an honest pace for her to close into.

#7 Riptide Rock is taking a large step up in trip, from a six-furlong allowance win last out to this ten-furlong Classic trip. However, he should be a serious contender. His last-out win shows just how well he can handle the Tapeta track. And, between his two-turn form at Oaklawn and his stout pedigree, he should have a good chance to enjoy the mile and a quarter.

Morning line favourite #8 Keep Grinding is a stalking to midpack type, giving him a chance to work out a good trip in this field. Even though his regular rider Justin Stein takes the call on Munnyfor Ro instead, his new rider Rafael Hernandez often shows up strong in big races, including Canadian Classics. He comes third off the lay, and that could be enough to return him to the peak performance he needs here.

Looking now to the price horses, #10 Dance Some Mo has a lot to like for a longshot in the Queen’s Plate. Trained by Graham Motion, he tries stakes company for the first time, but it isn’t a huge step up in class given that he has never faced a Canadian-restricted company before. His pedigree also shines for this long trip, as he is by Uncle Mo from the Canadian Classic family that includes Dancethruthedawn and Dance Smartly.

Even though he is drawn fairly outside, Dance Some Mo has the tactical speed to work out a good trip from that gate. It also weighs in his favour that Patrick Husbands rides. He is an experienced Woodbine jockey and has already won two editions of the Queen’s Plate.

Another intriguing longer shot is #12 Tidal Forces. Though a few of these foes beat him last time in the Marine (G3), he is lightly enough raced to move forward in this, just his fourth career start. He is tactical enough to work a trip from this outside gate, already has a win going a mile and an eighth, and has a pedigree that should help him get the mile and a quarter.
