While the Tournament is a few weeks off, it is a great time to bet early on who will the 2021 March Madness bracket.
Best NHL Prop Bets for 2021
A month into the 2021 NHL is a great time to revisit our favourite NHL Award betting props and make some updated betting predictions.
Although it has been a bit of a mess – with some teams missing up to two weeks’ worth of games – the 2021 NHL season is moving forward, and we are starting to get a picture of the best players and teams in the league. We can make some early season predictions on some awards including NHL MVP and Rookie of the Year, with our information. You can find the best NHL Prop bets for 2021 below.
We also want to note that NHL prop betting markets open and close throughout the season. It is smart to check out the sites we list often to find the latest hockey odds and see what markets are available for betting.
NHL MVP Pick
With 28 points in 16 games, Connor McDavid leads the National Hockey League in points and is the top pick to win the 2021 Hart Trophy Award. McDavid and teammate Leon Draisaitl and singlehandedly keeping the Edmonton Oilers in the playoff race. However, unlike the NBA MVP, the award has a chance to go to a player on a non-playoff team, so even if the Oilers fall down the North Division standings, McDavid can still win the MVP if his numbers are strong enough.
Over an 82-game season, McDavid is on pace to put up 143 points – which would be the most points by any since 1996. McDavid has never maintained that level of scoring over a full season before – but he could keep it up for about 56 games and easily best everyone except his linemate (Draisaitl) in scoring to win his second Hart Trophy.
Pick: Conor McDavid (3.00) to Win the NHL MVP
Sleeper for the 2021 Hart Trophy Award
One guy to keep an eye on is Patrice Bergeron. Bergeron has 18 points in his first 14 games – helping the Boston Bruins lead the competitive East Division. The Bruins have a chance at finishing with the best record in the NHL this season – which could help Bergeron edge out other players on worse teams. Also, Bergeron will need to keep up his scoring pace of at least a point per game for the rest of the season – something he has done once before (1.22 points per game in 2018-19)
Pick: Patrice Bergeron (TBA) to Win the 2021 NHL MVP
Vezina Trophy Winner Prediction
We have ourselves a tight race for the Vezina Trophy winner this season – with Andrei Vasilevskiy, Phillipp Grubauer, Marc-Andre Fleury and Semyon Varlamov all having strong seasons. We are going to bet on Andrei Vasilevskiy – as he has done it in the most games (12) of the four.
Vasilevskiy won the award in 2019 – winning 39 games and posting g a .925 save percentage and 2.40 GAA. While he will not match the win total from that season (or if he did during a 56 game season, it might go down as the single most incredible goaltending season), his .933 save percentage, and 1.92 GAA are better. We like the Tampa netminder to win his second Vezina in three years.
Pick: Andrei Vasilevskiy (TBA) to Win the 2021 Vezina Trophy
Keep An Eye on Mackenzie Blackwood
MacKenzie Blackwood has only had a chance to play three games this – due to him contacting Covid and his team having a bunch of games postponed – but when he has played, he has looked like a stud. Blackwood owns a .948 save percentage (saving 109 of 115 shots in three games) and a 1.90 GAA. He is the best goaltender based on Goals Allowed Percentage – a metric that compares goaltenders relative to league goals allowed.
He obviously needs to play more than three games to win the award – and he should be back in action this week. If he plays as well as he did over the week or two, you should start hearing his name mentioned with the other Vezina Trophy candidates. You may need to request Blackwood odds from some online sportsbooks – as he is yet to establish himself as a big-name player in the National Hockey League.
Pick: Mackenzie Blackwood (TBA) to Win the 2021 Vezina Trophy
NHL Rookie of the Year Prediction
It is a challenging year for NHL rookies – with a shortened offseason and training camp – meaning many guys are playing limited minutes or struggling to adapt to life in the world’s best league. However, one guy is easily the best rookie this season and the smartest bet to win 2021 NHL Rookie of the Year – Kirill Kaprizov.
The left-winger has been highly productive for the Minnesota Wild – scoring nine points in his first 11 NHL games. That ties him for the rookie lead in points (as of February 15) with Pius Suter. The difference is Suter has played 16 games compared to 11 for Kaprizov.
Once the Minnesota Wild returns to action, we expect more money to be laid on Kaprizov – so bet on him early.
Pick: Kirill Kaprizov (2.50) to Win 2021 NHL Rookie of the Year
