Canadian Teams Season Opener Betting Prediction

Find our predictions on the opening games for the Canadian NHL teams on the season.

We are going to focus our Canadian teams season opener betting predictions on three games. Why only three to start the year? Only five of the seven Canadian teams are playing on the first Wednesday night of the season (the second night overall of the 2021-22 NHL season). Ottawa opens their season against Toronto on Thursday and Calgary's first game of the year is against the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday.

Canadian Team NHL Betting Preview for October 13

Last year when covering the Canadian teams and NHL betting, every game during the season was an all-Canadian matchup. This season things return to normal, although we do get two matches up on Wednesday night between Canadian teams.

Montreal Canadiens vs. Toronto Maple Leafs Betting Picks

The Montreal Canadiens head to Toronto to open the season. The last time these two played in Toronto, the Montreal Canadiens completed their 3-1 comeback against the Maple Leafs. The loss was an embarrassment for the Leafs’ franchise and not indicative of what happened between the rivals during the regular season.

NHL Bets Oct 13

The Leafs played much better against Montreal during the regular season than the playoffs. They took seven of ten games against their long-time rivals including four of five in Toronto.

Montreal is also dealing with more injuries than the Maple Leafs. Carey Price – before checking himself into the NHL’s Assistance Program – was out until at least December. They are also without Mike Hoffman – their newest offseason addition – and Shea Weber (for the season). Bet on the Leafs to win this one in front of their fans (the first game in front of fans since March 2020 should give them a boost as well).

Vancouver Canucks vs. Edmonton Oilers Betting Picks

The stars clash in the second game of Wednesday featuring two Canadian teams with Connor McDavid and the Oilers taking on the Vancouver Canucks. While we are focusing on what teams will win each game,  we also like the over 6.0 goals as a betting pick on this game.

The Vancouver Canucks have some excellent young players on their team. Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes and budding stars on the West Coast who the Canucks are building their futures around. They looked like stars during the 2020 bubble playoffs, although the team regressed a bit last season – with injuries to blame.

The Edmonton Oilers have the best one-two punch in the NHL with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The two combined for 41 points in ten games against Vancouver last season – or 4.1 points per game combined. The Canucks top two scorers last year – Brock Boeser and J.T. Miller 1.75 points per game combined last season.

NHL Division Predictions

The Oilers issue is never McDavid and Draisaitl – it is the pieces around them. They get minimal point production from their other forwards outside the odd game from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. It did not matter last season until the playoffs, and it does not seem to matter when they play more finesse teams (like the Vancouver Canucks).

The more we talk about it, the more we went to go with the Oilers. The Oilers scored at will against the Vancouver Canucks last year. They also have a more reliable goaltender in Mike Smith and have home-ice advantage.

Winnipeg Jets vs. Anaheim Ducks Betting Picks

The Winnipeg Jets open the 2021-22 season on the road against the lowly Anaheim Ducks – a team favoured to finished last in the Western Conference this season. The Winnipeg Jets go into this season with Stanley Cup aspiration and were our choice for the best Canadian team to bet to will win the Stanley Cup and end Canada’s Cup drought.

The Jets have the most well-rounded roster in Canada. They have offensive production from their veterans and young forwards, added good defenders in Brenden Dillon and Nate Schmidt to go with Neal Pionk, and have the best goaltender of the seven Canadian teams.

You can tell the Ducks are rebuilding if you have watched them this preseason. They are struggling against San Jose, Los Angeles, and Arizona – three teams not projected to do much better than Anaheim this season. The most concerning thing about the Ducks is goaltender John Gibson. Gibson, who once looked like a promising NHL starter, is now averaging 3.00 GAA over the last two seasons.

You throw in Gibson’s decline and the Ducks offence – which ranked last in scoring last season – and they are going to lose a lot of games this season. Expect one of those losses is their season opener against Winnipeg.
