I mean, it sounds like a copout to just go with the Kansas City Chiefs – but after their offseason, it makes sense to bet on them. If you watched the Super Bowl last year, you know what the Chiefs’ biggest problem was – an unhealthy and underperforming offensive line.

What did the Chiefs do in the offseason? Go out and get two high-quality offensive linemen – Orlando Brown and Joe Thuney. They also lured Kyle Long out of retirement, adding a third great piece to block for Mahomes. Those players are instant upgrades for the Chiefs – whose offensive hummed like a well-oiled machine when their line was healthy.

With protection, Patrick Mahomes is the best player in the world. His weapons – Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill – are nightmare matchups for any team. If running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire improves in his sophomore and another wide receiver compliments Hill – this could be a historic offence.

The defence is also good – and often underappreciated. Chris Jones and Tyrann Mathieu both appeared in the top-60 of the NFL top-100 list. If Frank Clark is healthy (and avoids legal troubles), he and Jones are one of the best pass-rush duos in the NFL. The Chiefs ranked fourth in QB knockdown rate at 11.8% and tied for fifth in interceptions with 16.

As long as the team is healthy, the Chiefs are the class of the AFC. The blueprint Tampa Bay deployed to beat them is hard to replicate – and aided by the lack of health on the o-line. Expect better from the Chiefs in 2021-22, which means a second Super Bowl for Mahomes and Andy Reid.

Best Underdog to Win the Super Bowl

Go back over the last ten Super Bowls – dating back to 2012. Over that stretch, you get a 50% rate of winning quarterbacks you would not consider the “elite” of the NFL. Eli Manning – two amazing playoffs run, primarily average his career. Russell Wilson, not an elite QB yet. Joe Flacco, like Eli Manning, but worse. Peyton Manning, old and injured. Nick Foles, one great season and a legendary Super Bowl performance.

Basically, excluding Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes, the Super Bowl-winning quarterback was not a league MVP or elite QB. What those teams did have were some elite defensive players, playmakers on offence, and a good coach.

Taking all this into account points to one team – the Cleveland Browns. The Browns have one of the best offensive lines and the running back tandem in the NFL. Defensively, they have one of the best players in the league – Myles Garrett. They also have Denzel Ward – a quality defensive back – and Olivier Vernon, who had nine sacks over his last nine games. They also signed John Johnson III, one of the highest-rated safeties (by PFF), last season.

While not in the elite category, their quarterback Baker Mayfield was one of the best in the league over the second half of the season. In his final eight games, including the playoffs – Mayfield only tossed two interceptions to 16 passing touchdowns with a 64.4% competition percentage.

Mayfield could take another step forward in his second year with Kevin Stefanski (the reigning NFL Coach of the Year). If he does, this team is dangerous. If he stays the course, they still have enough talent around Mayfield to make a run at the Super Bowl.

Best Division Futures to Bet on the 2021-22 NFL Season

To Win the NL EastBetway
Dallas Cowboys2.10
Washington Football Team3.50
New York Giants5.50
Philadelphia Eagles5.50

The last team in the NFC East (and the only team since the NFL switched to four divisions) to repeat as division champion was the Philadelphia Eagles from 2001 to 2004. We can see that trend ending, with the Washington Football Team repeating as champs in 2021-22.

The Dallas Cowboys are the favourites. The problem with the Cowboys is all the concerns around quarterback Dak Prescott. Prescott is by far the most talented QB in the division. We watched the Cowboys implode last season after he was lost to injuries. The problem is no one knows how healthy Dak is going into the season.

That is why we like Washington to win. They have some great young players on both sides of the ball. Antonio Gibson could be one of the best running backs this season. Terry McLaurin is on the fringe of breaking out. The addition of Ryan Fitzpatrick gives the offence an element they lacked last season.

Washington’s biggest strength, though, is their defence. Chase Young is an absolute stud who could win Defensive Player of the Year. Young, along with Montez Sweat, Jonathan Allen, and Daron Payne, form the best defensive line in the NFL. The team also has two top-26 ranked cornerbacks (by PFF) in William Jackson III and Kendall Fuller and an emerging safety in Kamren Curl.

Coaching is another edge Washington has over Dallas. While we watched Mike McCarthy struggle in his first year in Dallas, Ron Riviera put together a great season – despite also dealing with a quarterback carousel. Take Washington to win the NFC East.
