Game of the Week – Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Baltimore Ravens
|Away Team||Home Team|
Pittsburgh Steelers +5.5
|-110||-110||Baltimore Ravens -5.5|
Two AFC juggernauts – the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens – highlight the best game of Week 8 of the 2020 NFL season. The Steelers are the NFL’s last undefeated team at 6-0, one win away from tying the franchise’s best start in their history.
The Ravens are coming off their bye week and enter the game only a win behind the Steelers for the top seed in the AFC. The Steelers at +5.5-point are among the biggest underdogs in NFL history with an undefeated record and six or more wins.
Lamar Jackson does not have much experience against the Steelers in his young career. He only threw one pass against the Steelers in his rookie season and made one start against them last year (as he sat out the Ravens victory over the Steelers in Week 17 last year).
While the Ravens won Jackson’s lone start, it was one of Jackson’s ugliest games. Jackson tossed three picks and was sacked five times in the 26-23 victory. The victory came against a quarterback combination of Devlin Hodges and Mason Rudolph, who combined 20-29 for 199 and a TD. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is having a productive season with 13 passing TDs and a career-best 68.2 completion percentage in six games after missing all but two games last year.
The spread is quite large for how good these teams are – especially on defence. They are each top-seven in points allowed and yards per play against. The home field also is not as important as it is a typical season. A field goal game seems about right, meaning we like the Steelers to cover on the road.
Pick: Pittsburgh Steelers (+5.5) -110
Over of the Week – Las Vegas Raiders vs. Cleveland Browns
|-110||-110||Under 54.5 Points|
After upsetting the Chiefs on the road, the Raiders laid an egg against the Buccaneers at home in Week 7, giving up 45 points. The game marks the fifth time this season the Raiders have allowed at least 30 points to an opponent.
The only time they did not give up at least 30 was Week 2 against the Saints when they surrendered 24 points. The Raiders enter the game giving up the second-most points per game in the NFL this season.
The team giving up the third-most points per game this year is – drum roll, please – the Cleveland Browns. The Browns defence has underwhelmed this season, despite a few bright spots. The team gives up a first down on 40.6% of passing attempts and 16 passing touchdowns – both fourth highest in the NFL.
The rushing defence has been slashed for nine TDs this season – tying them for the seventh-most in the NFL. Bet the over in this game.
Pick: Over 54.5 (-110)
Under of the Week – New England Patriots vs. Buffalo Bills
|-110||-110||Under 44.0 Points|
You need to go back to the 2000 NFL season to find the last time the Buffalo Bills held a three-game lead over the New England Patriots. While the Bills looked flat against the horrendous New York Jets in Week 7 – scoring only field goals in an 18-10 win – they certainly looked better than the Patriots.
The Patriots are coming off their biggest home loss in the Bill Belichick era – a 33-6 shellacking to the San Francisco 49ers. Cam Newton threw only 98 yards in the loss, marking the fourth time in five games this season, the former MVP failed to throw more than 175 yards.
While Bill Belichick is an expert at getting the most out of his teams and players, in the pass-friendly NFL, the team needs much more out of the quarterback position. The Patriots have the fewest passing TDs and the most interceptions in the NFL this season.
Add in some rain and wind in the forecast in Buffalo next Sunday, and this game is our pick for the best under of the week.
Pick: Under 44.0 (-110)
Moneyline of the Week – Los Angeles Rams vs. Miami Dolphins
|Away Team||Home Team|
Los Angeles Rams
After Brian Flores made the call during the team’s bye week to switch from veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick to the highly touted rookie, it is Tua time in Miami. Tua Tagovailoa showed many of the intangibles in his college career of a promising NFL quarterback.
The challenge for the Dolphins is adjusting their offence to fit Tua. Tua presents one unique challenge for the Dolphins – he is a left-handed quarterback. While lefties have success in the NFL (most notably Steve Young), with limited practice and training camp for Tua and the offensive line to work together, it could take a few games for the team to adjust, which is a problem against the Los Angeles Rams.
The Rams have arguably the best player in the NFL in Aaron Donald as he can disrupt offences as well as anyone in NFL history. The Rams also have an efficient offence this season. Any time Donald can get the Rams a short field, their offence has a good chance of scoring.
The Rams are worth betting on the moneyline in Week 8. Some rookie zaniness to keep the game close is always a possibility, but probably not enough for the Dolphins to pull off the upset.
Pick: Los Angeles Rams (-185) to Win
Interesting Line of the Week – New York Jets vs. Kansas City Chiefs
|Away Team||Home Team|
New York Jets +20.5
|-110||-110||Kansas City Chiefs -20.5|
Before Week 7 – when the Jets played arguably their best game of the season – early lines on this game had the Chiefs as 22.0-point favourites – which puts them right outside the top-five biggest favourites in the league’s history.
The line dropped down to 20.5 after the Jets’ defence showed a few glimpses of life against the Bills. In NFL, only one team ever covered a spread of 21 points or more – the Steelers in 1976 against Tampa Bay. Even the Jets, who have been 20.5-point underdogs twice in 2007 and 2019, both against the Patriots) covered both those games.
The only way the Jets are covering this game is if they fire Adam Gase. However, since we have not heard anything about that as of Monday morning, it looks like they are keeping him for another week, which means we expect the Chiefs to lay a smackdown on the Jets.
Pick: Kansas City Chiefs -20.5 (-110)
