Who Will Win the 2021 NBA Finals?

The NBA Finals - featuring the Suns and Bucks get started on July 7, with their seven-game series to determine the 2021 NBA Champion. The Bucks finally got over the hump with Giannis – after playoff failures marred their 2019 and 2020 seasons.

The Suns – grew from their 8-0 bubble run from last season and added Chris Paul to give them a roster good enough to make the NBA Finals. But of the two teams, which one is a better bet to win the NBA Finals.

The injury to Giannis Antetokounmpo is the most significant thing to consider going into this series. With Giannis sidelined with a hyper-extended leg (currently listed as day-to-day), online sportsbooks have made the Suns the favourites.

The Bucks did manage to knock out the Hawks without their biggest star. However, without him 100% (at least to start the Finals), the Bucks will be hard-pressed to beat the Suns seven times. Obviously, injuries can occur to any player at any time. The Suns have been lucky with injuries this season, but any injury could derail their season.

If Giannis comes back healthy by game 3 (once the Bucks return home), he is the type of player that will exhaust the Suns on defence. Giannis put up 40 points per game against the Suns this season, including 47 points in Phoenix. Despite all the effort from Giannis, the Bucks lost both games to the Suns this season by one point each.

It will be up to Khris Middleton to do a lot of the heavy work for the Bucks while Giannis is recovering. While Middleton has had some outstanding games this postseason, I would rather have Chris Paul or Devin Booker as my top offensive option. Overall, it should be an entertaining series – with the Suns coming out on top to win the franchise’s first title.

Pick: Phoenix Suns (1.57) to Win the 2021 NBA Finals

Chris Paul for Finals MVP

Chris Paul is the best player to bet will win the 2021 Finals MVP for a multitude of reasons. Making the NBA Finals is a legacy definer for Paul. After 16 years in the league (drafted in 2005 out of Wake Forest), Paul finally got over the hump that defined his time in the NBA.

Paul has some outstanding games these playoffs – including a 40 point game in the close-out game (becoming the oldest player to drop 40 or more in an elimination game) against the Clippers. Games like that – even if he only has one or two games close to that great in the Finals – are likely enough to sway voters to give him the honour.

Pick: Chris Paul (2.70) to Win Finals MVP

Cameron Payne for Finals MVP

If you want one longshot worth a small wager to win Finals MVP – Cameron Payne is the best bet to place.  Payne can pop off for some highly productive outings – including 29 points and nine assists performance in game two against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Payne also could fill in if Chris Paul gets hurt – which is when he has been most productive for the Suns. A small bet on Payne (maybe a fifth or a tenth of a unit) is not a bad strategy as it can hedge you against injuries to the stars.

Pick: Cameron Payne (201.00) for Finals MVP

Brook Lopez to Win Finals MVP

If the Bucks are going to win the Finals (with a hampered Giannis), they will need big production from Brook Lopez. Lopez proved against Atlanta he still is capable of being a top offensive option for a team as he dropped 33 in their game five win. If he can put up numbers against the Suns and help the Bucks win the series, he also excellent betting value at 151.00.

Pick: Brook Lopez (151.00) to Win Finals MVP
