We are at the two-month mark of the NBA Season – and despite games postponed – the season is going close to expected. The Brooklyn Nets – with Kevin Durant playing out of his mind – are the favourites to win the title – with the best of the west taking three of the five top spots. Are the Nets the play? Find out and more in our NBA Finals futures update for December 2021.

Best Bet to Win the 2022 NBA Championship – Nets can Bring Championship back to New York

Two months into the 2021-22 NBA Season, the best NBA betting lines have the Brooklyn Nets as the favourites to win the 2022 NBA Finals. And with how well Kevin Durant is playing – we think they are the team to beat this season.

Durant is the best player in the NBA this season (sorry Jokic but your team just is not playing well enough). He has carried the Nets to the best record in the East Conference – without Kyrie Irving playing a game and Harden out/out of shape for part of the season. The key to Durant’s MVP season is not his scoring – but his passing/playmaking. Durant is on pace for a career-high assist rate at 28.7%.

The other thing with the Nets this year – that makes them better than last year is the team’s depth. The addition of Patty Mills was one of the best moves of the offseason. Mills is averaging a career-high 13.6 points per game on a career-high .586 effective field goal percentage. Rookie David Duke Jr. was forced into the starting role and promptly averages 11.3 points and 10.3 rebounds. He went undrafted.

Overall, they are a deep team with the best player in the world. As long as Harden is healthy for the playoffs and Irving is not a distraction when he returns, this is the best team and our pick to win the championship.

Biggest Threat to the Nets – Suns or Warriors?

In our November 2021 NBA futures and predictions, we hailed the Golden State Warriors as the top dogs in the league. While we are still high on the Golden State Warriors, we think the best betting value is on the Phoenix Suns.

The Suns are proving last season’s run to the Finals was no fluke. The Suns (as of December 20) have the best record in the NBA (24-5). They rank second in the West in points scored and points allowed.

The Suns’ depth is key to their success. The Suns have eight players currently averaging over 10.0 points per game. Chris Paul does an excellent job getting everyone involved (averaging 10.1 assists per game), while Bookier is having his most effective offensive season (despite averaging the fewest points per game since 2016-17).

With those guys taking control of the offence, Mikal Bridges can takeover on defence. Bridges is having a stellar season – and is a top-five candidate to win Defensive Player of the Year. Deandre Ayton is also playing great defence this season – and could also make a run at the All-NBA Defensive team.

The last reason we give the edge to the Suns over the Warriors is Phoenix can weather injuries better this season. If one of the Suns’ starters goes down, they have players to fill in. Even if Booker or Paul is out for an extended period, they are still elite. The Warriors sink if Curry is out of the lineup. Curry has had some injuries recently – so it is always possible he needs to sit down for two weeks. If it happened in the playoffs, the Warriors season is over.

Best Underdog Bet – the Chicago Bulls are the NBA’s Most Underappreciated Team

The Chicago Bulls had one of the busiest offseasons in the NBA this summer. They added Lonzo Ball, DeMar DeRozan, and Alex Caruso. The moves raised some eyebrows but did not necessarily move the needle. Well, two months in the season, the Bulls are arguably a top-five team in the NBA.

The addition of DeMar DeRozan was arguably the best move of the offseason. DeRozan is averaging 26.8 points per game this season. He just dropped 19 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Bulls to a win over the Los Angeles Lakers.

The key for the Bulls – it not just the addition of Demar’s offence – but the balance of the team. Alex Caruso and Lonzo Ball add great defensive pieces for the Bulls. Their presence on the court has helped the Bulls improve from a -0.9 point differential in 2020-21 to +2.7 this season.

The Bulls have also played well against the Brooklyn Nets this season – going 2-0 with one win coming by 23 points. They match up well against the Nets – which is something you need if you are going to have a shot at winning the East.
