MLS Playoffs 2020 Picks and Predictions

After delays, a midseason tournament, Canadian teams only playing Canadian teams for a month, and empty stadiums, we have finally made it to the MLS playoffs. Can the Canadians win the title? Let's have a look at the 2020 MLS Playoffs picks and predictions.

Two Canadian made it to the playoffs this season – the Montreal Impact and Toronto FC. We like one of those two teams to contend for the MLS Cup, while we think the other can pull off a big upset to start the playoffs.

Toronto FC Playoff Predictions

The Toronto FC was once again one of the best teams in the league this season. They rattled off a nine-game unbeatable streak to enter the season's final stretch, tied for the best record in the league. Toronto ended up finishing second overall in the East and the league, clinching a meeting with the highest-seeded winner from the play-in round.

The one win over their last four games should not overshadow how great the team looked for most of the year and how great they have played the previous five years. Toronto is also great at winning close games – which is always advantageous in the playoffs.

The extra days off between the end of the season and their first playoff game will help the club. If they can get back all, or at least a combination of Alex Bono, Pablo Piatti, Justin Morrow, and Marky Delgado for the playoffs, they can beat anyone and win the 2020 MLS Cup.

Pick: Toronto FC (+800) to win the MLS Cup

Montreal Impact Playoff Predictions

Although the Montreal Impact made the postseason for the first time since 2016, it is due to the MLS expanding the playoffs from 14 to 18 teams. Montreal averaged 1.13 points per game this season, a lower average than the last three years they did not make the playoffs. The chances of them winning the MLS Cup are not great. However, they can pull off the upset on Friday night against the New England Revolution

New England Revolution

-173 +301 (Draw)
+353 Montreal Impact

The first of the Eastern Conference play-in games is between Montreal and New England. While New England is a heavy favourite, these two clubs have a historically close rivalry. Montreal is 10-12-3 all-time against New England.

The clubs played four times this season, with New England winning three of four. Montreal opened the year with a win over New England before the Pandemic shut down the season. Since then, New England is 3-0-0, outscoring Montreal seven goals to three. In 2019, Montreal won one game, and their other match ended in a draw.

However, Montreal can win this game if their offence shows up. Montreal outscored New England by seven goals this season, despite being shutout in two of their final three games.

The time off between the end of the regular season and the playoffs will help Montreal's offence rebound. Montreal played one of their best games of the season after a month off between the MLS is Back Tournament – winning 2-0 against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Overall, we like the potential of a Montreal upset and the value offered on the club – which is relatively high considering this is an eight vs. nine seed matchup.

Pick: Montreal Impact (+353) to Win

MLS Other Bets to Make

Major League Soccer is the fourth North American sports league to reach the playoffs after dealing with the Pandemic interrupting or delaying their season. The first three being the NHL, MLB, and NBA. One trend sticks out after watching the playoffs for those three leagues – the best teams were winning.

The Los Angeles Dodgers won their first World Series in 32 years after finishing the regular season with baseball's best record. The Los Angeles Lakers grabbed the top-seed in the West Conference. The Tampa Bay Lightning were second in the Eastern Conference when the NHL suspended play in 2020 and stayed in second-place after the NHL play-in round of the playoffs.

These teams all have stars, pedigree, and regular-season success.

Following this trend, the best clubs to bet on to win the MLS Cup include the Toronto FC, along with the Philadelphia Union, Sporting Kansas City, and the Seattle Sounders. We already touched on why we like Toronto FC to win, but if you are not sold on Toronto, consider one of our other picks below to win the 2020 MLS Cup.

Philadelphia Union

Philadelphia was the best team in the MLS this season. They finished with the most points (47), best goal differential (+24), and fewest goals allowed (20). They finished tied for thirds in goals (44) and were the only team to average over 2.00 points per game. The franchise has yet to win a cup, but the talent they have displayed looks good enough to win one in this shortened-season.

Pick: Philadelphia Union (+450) to win the MLS Cup

Sporting Kansas City

Sporting Kansas City finished with the top-seed in the West by winning the tiebreaker – points per game over Portland and Seattle. They played one less game than Seattle and two less than Portland, while all three clubs tied with 39 points. Homefield is a big edge this year, with travel challenges due to the Pandemic.  Kansas City also plays arguably the worst playoff team in round one, giving them an easier path to the finals than other West teams.

Pick: Sporting Kansas City (+900) to win the MLS Cup

Seattle Sounders

Although they lost the tiebreaker for the top spot in the West, on paper, they look like the best team in the Conference. The defending MLS Cups (pedigree) posted a +21 goal-differential and only lost five times in 22 contests. A team has not repeated as champ since 2012, but Seattle is a good bet to do so in 2020.

Pick: Seattle Sounders (+500) to win the MLS Cup
