Major League Soccer Futures and Predictions
The Major League Soccer is rapidly approaching, so get ready for another exciting season with our betting predictions for 2021.
After a delay and strangeness in the 2020 MLS season, which eventually condensed it down to only games, Major League Soccer is attempting to return to normal – although the later start shows they will not entirely back to normal in 2021. Still, it is exciting to have the MLS back.
The Columbus Crew won its second MLS Cup last season – beating the Seattle Sounders 3-0 in the Finals. Philadelphia Union won the Supports Shield – the first time they ever finished the year with the most points in the MLS. Are those two clubs our top Major League Soccer futures and predictions choices, or in the ever-expanding MLS is repeating as the top club and league winner becoming too difficult?
MLS Cup Odds and Picks
|Los Angles FC||4.97|
|New York City FC||9.00|
|Orlando City SC||13.00|
|New England Revolution||15.00|
|Atlanta United FC||22.00|
After a third-place finish and a Supporters Shield in their first two years, Los Angeles FC underwhelmed last season – finishing seventh in the West and losing in the first round of the 2020 MLS playoffs. Despite the results of the 2020 MLS season – Sports Interaction has LAFC as the favourite – but are they the best bet to win in 2020?
With a roster that will look much more like the record-setting one from 2019, this club can win the MLS Cup in 2021.
LAFC suffered as much as any club (save for the Canadian ones) last season. Their best player – Carlos Vela – played four games last year while also being without Diego Rossi and Brian Rodriguez for the postseason.
Although the club lost Brian Rodriguez on loan to UD Almeria, getting back Vela and Rossi is most important. Vela is healthy entering the 2021 season, and pairing him with Diego Rossi, gives LAFC the most dangerous scoring duo in the league.
If Eddie Segura can play like a top-three central defender and Mark-Anthony Kaye provides well-rounded play at midfield – this club should look much more like the record-setting group from 2019.
Pick: Los Angeles FC (4.96) to Win the 2021 MLS Cup
Atlanta United FC Offering the Best Value to Win the MLS Cup
After finishing in the top four for the first three years of the club’s existence, Atlanta United tumbled down the standings last year, finishing 23rd overall. But Atlanta had some bad luck last season, which attributed to their drop in the standings.
Their best player – and 2018 MLS MVP – Josef Martinez played one match for Atlanta during the MLS season – a 2-1 win over Nashville before the league went on hiatus. Without Martinez – who briefly held the single-season goals record in the MLS – Atlanta could not muster enough offence to be competitive.
With Martinez returning this year to play in front of a competent defence and goaltender Brad Guzan – who tied for seventh with six clean sheets – this is a much better team that can make some noise in the MLS this season.
Pick: Atlanta United FC (22.00) to win the MLS Cup
New England Under Bruce Arena is Dangerous
New England showed everyone last year showed that when healthy, manager Bruce Arena can get a lot out of his club. New England made the play-in game, beat Montreal, then processed to beat Philadelphia and Orlando before losing a close affair to Columbus in the East Finals.
Bruce Arena – as a three-time MLS Cup winner – knows how to win in the playoffs. If New England can stay healthy, Matt Turner remains one of the best goalkeepers in the league, and Carles Gil is a Best XI level player – this is a team you do not want to face in the playoffs.
Pick: New England Revolution (15.00) to win the MLS Cup
Can a Canadian Team Hoist the MLS Cup?
Once again, in 2021, the Canadian teams are at a disadvantage. For at least the start of the year, the Canadian clubs will play their home games in the United States (as the border remains closed until an undetermined date).
Toronto FC’s pedigree gives them by far the best soccer odds of winning the MLS Cup – but a quiet offseason and ageing core could make it difficult for Toronto to stay healthy and competitive from April to November.
The Vancouver Whitecaps should improve in 2021, but the team’s young talent is not quite ready to make the leap. That leaves us with a scrappy Montreal team that made some smart moves in the offseason.
After making the play-in game last season – losing to New England – Montreal decided to spend in the offseason. They added Djordje Mihailovic – a talented and young midfielder that should make an immediate impact.
They also added Bjorn Johnsen – a 6’5″ striker and aerial threat who gives the Impact another scoring option. Will the additions be enough to beat the top dogs in and East? It will be a challenge, but if they can get into the dance and some of the young guys like Zorhan Bassong develop over the season – Montreal could be the biggest surprise in the MLS this season.
Pick: Montreal Impact (58.00) to Win the 2021 MLS Cup
