MLB Futures and Predictions for September

The final month of the MLB Regular Season is here, meaning we have one last chance to make some MLB bets and predictions before the playoffs.

September is shaping up to be a great one in Major League Baseball. Many division races are tight, the battle for home-field is on, and Wild Card spots are up for grabs. With five months of data, we have a nice picture of the MLB landscape and can make some accurate MLB futures and predictions for September on who wins the American League, National League, and best Division futures to bet.

The American League is topped by a few behemoths this season – even with the Boston Red Sox recent struggles. Arguably the best team entering September is the New York Yankees. But there is a big question mark surrounding the team entering the final month of the MLB season. Can the Yankees Survive the Playoffs if Aroldis Chapman struggles?

Chapman is one of the most intimidating closers ever to step on the mound. He throws a higher percentage of pitches over 100mph than any other pitcher in baseball. But there are some causes for concerns for the New York Yankees. For one, Chapman WHIP and ERA are a career-worst 1.41 and 3.77.

Some relate his struggles to his posture and time between pitches on the mound. When slouched and pitching slow, he cannot command his fastball as well – and turns to his other less effective pitches. The issue did not plague him for the first 23 games of the season (when his ERA was only 0.39). It also looks like something they are working out – as he pitched a clean ninth against the Athletics on August 26.

The Deep Yankees can Overcome Closer Struggles

Even if Chapman is struggling a bit, this team is on a roll. Giancarlo Stanton enters play on August 29, batting .310 for the month with eight home runs and 1.032 OPS. Gerrit Cole is arguably the best pitcher in baseball this season, and the team is about to get back two-time Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber for September.

Chapman or not, the Yankees locked in and loaded entering September. If they keep it up – which we are predicting – they will win the American League.

The National League – once quite the rollercoaster – looks pretty set going into September. The San Francisco Giants in first, with an upcoming date in the NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers (barring an upset loss in the Wild Card or they switch position in the NL West). That leaves the Milwaukee Brewers – comfortably in control of their division – and the winner of the NL East (Atlanta Braves currently leading the division).

Of those four teams, the one we are backing to win the National League is the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers have watched their offence significantly improve since the MLB All-Star. The team’s batting average jumped from .220 before to .265 in the 38 games since. Part of the reason their offence is improving is former MVP, Christian Yelich.

Yelich struggled throughout the first few months of the MLB season but is turning it on as of late. In his last 12 games (as of August 29), he is batting .364 with seven extra-base hits and a 1.001 OPS. He had 16 extra-base hits in his first 75 games. A potent Yelich with Avisail Garcia (76 RBIs, 12th in the NL) and Willy Adams (.920 OPS in 82 games since acquired from the Rays) make this is a strong lineup.

Cy Young Pitching Can Carry the Brewers

The real strength of the Brewers is their starting pitching. This season, the Brewers have three of the best pitchers in the NL – Brandon Woodruff, Corbin Burnes, and Freddy Peralta. Burnes and Woodruff are both Cy Young candidates this season. They rank second and third in ERA (2.30 and 2.38) and top-10 in pitching WAR in the NL this season. Their closer – Josh Hader – is also lights out with a 1.58 ERA and 27 saves.

The Brewers are a great ballclub this season. They have plenty of pieces and are putting together at the right time. They should have Freddy Peralta and Tyrone Taylor back in September, giving them everything they need for a run at the World Series.

At the start of August, the New York Mets led the NL East at 55-49. As we flip the calendar into September, they sit in third. The Atlanta Braves sat in third place at 52-54 on August 1. The Braves enter play on August 30, at 70-59, up 4.5 on the Philadelphia Phillies and 7.5 on the Mets.

The Atlanta Braves – despite losing one of the best young players in baseball, Ronald Acuna – are on a tear. The team has four players with 70 RBIs or more and ranks second in National League in home runs.

Their pitching continues to play well this season. The team has 15 shutouts total this season – tied for most in NL. For August, the group ranks first in strikeouts-to-walks ratio, second in WHIP and fifth in ERA in the NL. I would not expect anyone in the NL East to catch them in September, especially with the Mets struggles.
