Sho Time the Best Bet to Win the Home Derby

Sequestered away in Anaheim, Shohei Ohtani has been a bleeping revelation in Major League Baseball this season. He hits, he pitches, he mashes, he is Babe Ruth 100 years later. At the high elevation of Coors Field in Colorado, he could hit a ball 600ft (that is insanely far, so do not bet on that).

The slugging percentage of .700 is the highest since Barry Bonds in 2004, and if you remove him, it is the highest in Major League Baseball since Larry Walker (the Canadian Legend) hit for .710. Ohtani also is in first place in the American League with four triples.

Sure, the Home Run Derby has some variability, but going into the event, no one is a better bet to win the thing than Shohei “Sho Time” Ohtani.

Salvador Perez the Biggest Challenge to Sho Time

Of the eight guys in the bracket – excluding Ohtani  - the best guy to bet to win the derby is Salvador Perez. The Kansas City Royals All-Star catcher is on pace to smash his career-high in home runs (27 in 2017 and 2018) while still batting above his career batting average (.278 this season vs. .270 for his career).

Perez hit the longest and hardest home run of his career this season – a 114.2 mph, 460-foot behemoth on May 4. He is having one of the most productive seasons for a catcher in the last 20 years and is our favourite pick – besides Ohtani – to win the 2021 Home Run Derby.

Who Wins the 2021 MLB All-Star?

What a star-studded roster with not one, not two but three Toronto Blue Jays starting in the game and Bo Bichette as a reserve. Marcus Semien shook off a slow start to become one of – if not the – most dangerous hitting 2B in the league. Vlady is having one of the best seasons ever for a 22-year, and Teoscar Hernandez is proving his Silver Slugger from last year was no fluke.

The National League lacks Jacob deGrom as the starter hurts their chances of winning against the stacked AL line-up. The AL also has our Home Run Derby – Shohei Ohtani – pitching and hitting.

The NL side has some good reserves – especially Mookie Betts who could move to a starter with Acuna out for the season – but the American League is deeper and the better bet to win their eighth consecutive All-Star.
