Baylor vs. Gonzaga – Which Favourite are We Betting?

The general consensus this year is Baylor and Gonzaga are the best two teams in College Basketball. Both teams (as of February 23) have an undefeated record and very close basketball odds to win the thing – but who is the better bet to have an undefeated March and win the Tournament?

Gonzaga offence is running like a well-oiled machine this season – pacing College Basketball with 93.4 points per game (6.0 points more than second and 6.4 points more than third-place Baylor) and a 55.39% field goal percentage (Baylor ranks seventh at 50.7%). Gonzaga is also leading College Basketball with a 24.3 margin of victory – beating second-place Baylor by 0.1 points per game (meaning we could see these two switch positions before the season ends).

Baylor is also beating up on opponents and doing it very efficiently. The team ranks third in turnover margin at 6.1 per game. Baylor has also played a tougher schedule this season. They have as many wins against top-25 opponents as Gonzaga – despite playing five fewer games. Baylor’s margin against the spread this year is significantly higher than Gonzaga’s at +6.4 compared to +1.9. Baylor also leads College Ball with a three-point field goal percentage of 43.86.

So who gets the edge between Baylor and Gonzaga?

Right now, Gonzaga is better in enough categories over Baylor that we like them as the favourite to win the 2021 March Madness Tournament.

Pick: Gonzaga (3.75) to Win the 2021 March Madness Tournament

Do Not Sleep in Michigan

For much of the year, the debate for the best team was a two-horse race – but as the season approaches its climax, many are putting Michigan in the same stratosphere as Baylor and Gonzaga.

Juwan Howard is doing a fantastic coaching job in his second year at Michigan. Michigan is 16-1 so far this season – with just as many wins against ranked opponents as Gonzaga and Baylor while playing in – based on strength of schedule – the toughest Conference this year. They defend better than Baylor and Gonzaga – ranking fifth in the opponent’s field goal percentage.

If Michigan ends the season with wins over Iowa and Illinois (both top-ten teams as of February 23), you could argue they have a better resume entering the Tournament than any other team.

Pick: Michigan Wolverines (7.50) to Win the 2021 March Madness Tournament

Houston is a Defensive Juggernaut

Second in the country is Houston ranks in scoring defence (57.6 points allowed per game) 21 games into their campaign. The team is anchored by Quentin Grimes (the former Kansas Jayhawk), who leads the AAC with a defensive win share of 1.7. Grimes is joined by Justin Gorham (who leads the Conference in defensive rating), Dejon Jarreau, and Marcus Sasser to take up four of the top five spots in defensive win shares in the AAC – making Houston a nightmare to score against.

If the defence keeps playing as well as they have during March Madness – and Grimes and Sasser continue to hit 36.5% of their three-pointers collectively, this team can beat anyone.

Pick: Houston Cougars (21.00) to Win 2021 March Madness Tournament

Teams Outside the Top Ten We Like at the Tournament

We see a few underdogs entering the Tournament with some serious chops and a realistic chance of winning it all in 2021. Odds on the underdogs are available at BetWarrior.

West Virginia

Gutsy and talented – that is how I would describe West Virginia this season (and after watching their comeback win against Texas, who tumbled from 12th to 15th after the loss). They have held their own against some of the best teams this season. They lost by only five points to Gonzaga – the only game Gonzaga did not win by double digits so far this season.

Derek Culver is a serious threat in the Tournament – averaging 15 and 10 well shooting nearly 50%. Miles McBride is a solid playmaker and scorer who is only getting better as the season progresses. They are climbing the rankings as we inch towards the Tournament, so they are a good sleeper team to wager on now.

Pick: West Virginia Mountaineers (31.00) to Win 2021 March Madness Tournament

Loyola Chicago

With the third-best field goal percentage, this year at 51.13% and the lowest opponents points per game at 55.7 -Loyola Chicago is an underdog that can cause problems in this year’s Tournament.

Loyola’s previous success in the Tournament helps the team too – as they have not played any ranked opponents this year but have beaten big schools in the past. Plus, Sister Jean is getting up there in age, and I am sure they will play hard for her.

Pick: Loyola Chicago (41.00) to Win the 2021 March Madness Tournament
