Best Bet To Win Joshua-Usyk Rematch

One of the biggest boxing fights of all 2022 will undoubtedly be Anthony Joshua vs. Oleksandr Usyk 2 — whenever it happens. While no date is official for the rematch, we can still speculate on who the best bet to win would be between Joshua and Usyk. That’s exactly what we’re doing in this article. Read on for betting predictions!

Canada’s best sportsbooks don’t need an official fight date because they’ve already released betting odds for Joshua-Usyk 2. Only the moneyline is available right now — no over/under or props.

Interestingly enough, the betting lines to win in the first meeting were flipped the other way around. Before the September 2021 bout, Joshua was around 1.37 to win. Usyk, as the underdog, was 3.20 to score the upset — which he obviously did, paying out his bettors handsomely. Understanding how the first fight went down is where our betting preview begins below:

Usyk vs. Joshua Recap

Both Usyk and Joshua won boxing gold medals at the 2012 Olympics. Usyk took gold in heavyweight, while Joshua grabbed it at super heavyweight. However, if there’s one takeaway from the first fight, it’s that Usyk's technique inside the ring was far superior to Joshua’s. The Ukrainian put on an absolute boxing clinic, taking a unanimous decision victory. In the scorecards, he won 117-112, 116-112, and 115-113.

Where do we even start? How about the punches thrown stat? Here, Usyk connected with 148-of-529 punches as opposed to 123-of-641 for Joshua. Or how about power punches? Again, Usyk was far more accurate of the two. He landed 44 percent of his power shots (96 of 220) compared to Joshua’s 33 percent (71 of 214). This won’t appear on the stat sheet, but Usyk almost had Joshua on the floor in the final round. And according to Usyk, he would have dropped him had his trainer not told him to ease up.

Between his footwork and speed, Usyk completely overwhelmed Joshua — despite the disadvantage in size (Joshua had a three-inch and 20-pound edge). Usyk dictated most of the fight, applying pressure the entire bout. The fact that Usyk spent the majority of his career one-time at cruiserweight yet bullied the bigger and younger Joshua the entire fight was a shock to most of the boxing world.

The win made Usyk a holder of four different heavyweight belts. And while a heavyweight championship unification match with Tyson Fury felt like the natural next step, Joshua enacted his rematch clause right away instead. So this second fight is happening and if boxing promoter Eddie Hearn is to believe, it’s happening in May or so.

Joshua vs. Usyk 2 Betting Pick

If the fight indeed happens in May, as Hearn hinted, that would mean Joshua would have about eight months to correct the mistakes that cost him the first fight. Identifying those issues in the first place is where we start our Joshua vs. Usyk 2 betting pick analysis. Alright, so where did things go so wrong for AJ the first go-around?

Most of all, Joshua didn't play to his strengths and instead caved into the natural advantages of Usyk, who as we said, is the better pure boxer of the two. Look, Joshua isn't going to outpoint Usyk in a technical boxing match. However, Joshua can win a scrappy brawl between the two due to his superior size and power advantage.

Therefore, if Joshua wants to turn his luck around in the rematch, he's going to have to start a brawl — not a boxing match. How do you ask? Well, one way is to keep the fight at a closer distance, thus negating Usyk's footwork to a certain extent. The goal for Joshua should be to disrupt Usyk's rhythm by any means necessary.

Of course, this brawling strategy isn't without risk. It leaves Joshua more wide open for a big shot, which in the worst-case scenario, could end with him splatting on the canvas. And if Andy Ruiz proved anything, it's that Joshua can be knocked down (AJ fell four times in his only other career loss). Plus, as we mentioned beforehand, Usyk felt he could've knocked down AJ the first time anyway.

So while Joshua has a clear path to victory in the eventual rematch — brawling and knocking down Usyk — we don't think he's talented enough to execute it to win. Most of all, his defence, which isn't great to begin with, will be exposed even more while brawling. Usyk's southpaw style matches up perfectly against him, which should give him another win, setting up a dream fight versus Tyson Fury.
