Best Bet to Win the 2021 Grey Cup – Winnipeg Blue Bombers

At the halfway mark of the 2021 CFL season, one team stands above the rest – the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Blue Bombers are 6-1 this season, with a +75 points differential. They go into their bye week with the best offence and defence in the CFL.

Quarterback Zach Collaros is leading the charge in Winnipeg. He has tossed a league-high ten touchdowns while completing 70.4% of his passes. The Blue Bombers’ offence also has two of the top-nine rushers in the CFL this season with Andrew Harris (353 yards) and Brady Oliveira (195 yards).

Defensively, the team is just as good. Willie Jefferson – reigning Defensive Player of the Year – is making a case for the award again. In seven games he has four sacks and an interception. Jackson Jeffcoat leads the team with five sacks (second in the CFL), while Deatrick Nichols is tied for the league lead with three interceptions.

There are not many holes in this team anywhere on the field. If they can avoid injuries (Andrew Harris was out three games to start the season), they can repeat as Grey Cup Champions in 2021.

Other Teams with a Shot

Anything is possible during the CFL season and playoffs. With two-thirds of the league making the playoffs, there is a good chance an underdog halfway through the season wins the Grey Cup. Take the 2016 Ottawa Redblacks.

The club ended the season with an 8-9-1 record yet went on to win the Grey Cup. Their opponent was a much superior Calgary team with a 15-2-1 record, proving anything can happen in the playoffs.

Don’t Sleep on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats opened the season as the best bet to win the Grey Cup. However, a few duds to start the year caused them to move to fourth on CFL betting lines to win the Grey Cup. Recently, the Tiger-Cats have played much better. They are 3-1 over their last four games – and their one loss was by only one point to the Toronto Argonauts.

The key Hamilton is to win the East Division. Winning it guarantees them a first-round bye and home-field advantage for the entire playoffs (the 2021 Grey Cup is in Hamilton this year). Winning the division is doable for Hamilton. Hamilton still has a pair of games left against the Ottawa Redblacks – the worst team in the league.

The improvement in their record is also a bit surprising considering the carousel of quarterbacks in Hamilton. The Tiger-Cats have three QBs that have started a game this season. Dane Evans looked the best of the group – however, a lower-body injury sidelined him for up to six weeks. The replacement – David Watford – filled in well for Evans, completing 86.4% of his passing in a win over Calgary.

Hamilton’s defence is another reason why there is value betting on them to win the 2021 Grey Cup. Hamilton is second in yards allowed per game, third in points allowed per game, third in quarterback rating, and fourth in rushing yards allowed per game. There is value on Hamilton continuing to improve and contend for the Grey Cup.

The BC Lions are the Best Value Pick

The other underdog in the Canadian Football League that could win the 2021 Grey Cup is the BC Lions. The Lions are 4-2 this season – thanks to a MOP calibre year from quarterback Mike Reilly. Reilly leads the CFL with a 118.8 QB rating, 75.2 pass completion percentage, and an impressive 8-1 TD-INT ratio.

Reilly is not the only reason the Lions are exceeding expectations in 2021. The team ranks second in points per game allowed (17.7) and is tied with Winnipeg (who have played one more game) with ten interceptions.

What is even more impressive about the Lions is their ability to limit teams to field goals. The Lions have given up a league-low five offensive touchdowns this year –forcing teams to kick a league-high 22 field goals in six games. If the defence and Mike Reilly keep it going in the second half of the season, they have a chance at knocking off the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and winning the Grey Cup.
