Preseason CFL Grey Cup Futures for 2021

The CFL is back after a year off. Of the nine teams, who is the best bet to hoist the 109th Grey Cup? Let's have a look at the 2021 Grey Cup futures picks.

Find all the details on the upcoming season and with Preseason Grey Cup futures and betting predictions for the 2021 season below.

The 2021 Canadian Football League Details

There are changes and unknown for the upcoming Canadian Football League season.

  • Start date: The start date for the season is August 5, about five to six weeks later than the regular start date. The Canadian Football League needed assurances from the Canadian and Provincial Governments they could allow fans, which caused them to delay the start of the season.
  • Attendance: There will be attendance allowed at games in all stadiums. Capacity numbers (when teams are permitted full capacity) are currently unknown. Some CFL teams do not hit capacity, so this is not an issue everywhere.
  • Schedule: The total games have been trimmed from 18 to 14 – to make it work with the delayed start of the season and help make sure the following season starts on time. With fewer games, every game matters more than ever.
  • The Grey Cup: Delaying the start of the season means delaying the beginning of the playoffs and the Grey Cup. The 108th Grey Cup originally was on November 22, 2020. It will now take place on December 12, 2021, in Hamilton, Ontario. It is the first Grey Cup since 1972 to happen in December.
  • Original Expansion Date: The Atlantic Schooners originally planned to join the CFL in 2021. However, due to the pandemic, the expansion of the CFL is not happening in 2021 – maybe never. Ten teams would be excellent for the league, so we will see if they reverse the plan in the future.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats Primed to Win in 2021

After losing to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at the 2019 Grey Cup, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats open the 2021 CFL season as the CFL betting favourites – and rightly so.

The Tiger-Cats bring back much of the team that helped them reach the finals in 2021. Continuity is vital in a season where the last one was lost to the pandemic. The Tiger-Cats went 15-3 and were the best team in the league for most of the season.

Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli is back – after recovering from a season-ending knee surgery that cost him the end of the 2019 season. His backup – Dane Evans – played better than most CFL quarterbacks in his stead, which could create some healthy competition (something most teams are envious of) or offer a trade piece to fill a hole later in the season.

The receiving core of the Tiger-Cats is arguably the deepest in the league. Brandon Banks won the Most Outstanding Player Award in 2019 – after leading the league with 1550 yards, 112 receptions, and 13 touchdowns. His cohort – Bralon Addison – finished fifth in the league with 1236 receiving yards while adding seven trips to the endzone.

Along with their depth on offence was a defence that led the CFL in scoring. The Tiger-Cats allowed only 344 points in 2019 – 42 points better than the Saskatchewan Roughriders and 141 points better than the next best East Division team.  Ja’Gared Davis and Dylan Wynn ate quarterbacks for lunch in 2019 – combining for 24 sacks. This team has talent everywhere and is the best bet to win the 2021 Grey Cup.

Rebranded Elks Set for Improvement in 2019

After dropping the E***** name, the now Edmonton Elks are poised for a better season than their 2019 results. Edmonton posted a positive points differential despite finishing the season 8-10.

Quarterback Trevor Harris was as efficient as anyone in 2019 – tossing for 4027 yards, a 16-6 TD-INT ratio and a 71.8 completion percentage. Harris sent the time off focused on improving his game – heading to Massachusetts to train in the TB12 Method. Whether you think it is nonsense or not, Tom Brady has been…well, Tom Brady.

Edmonton’s offence and defence last season also ranked second in yards. If they can get better production out of the running game, you will not find better CFL betting odds on any team than the Edmonton Elks.

Best Win-Total Bet – Take Calgary to Finish Above .500

Calgary enters the 2021 CFL season with a win total of only 7.5 games (remember, it is a 14-game). If you bet on the under, you are betting on the Calgary Stampeders to have their worst season since a 7-10-1 record in 2007.

Since 2008, Calgary has won ten or more games every season – including at least 12 every year since 2012. The schedule is favourable as well, with three games against the BC Lions and bye weeks spread out well through the season.
