NHL Weekend Bets – Calgary and Edmonton Showdown Headlines Busy Weekend

Ottawa versus Toronto and Calgary versus Edmonton headline our opening weekend NHL betting preview.

It is a great weekend of NHL games to start the season – with an early season showdown between the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames and the battle of Ontario headlining our best NHL weekend bets for October 16.

Flames Try to Ignite the Battle of Alberta with an Upset against Edmonton

The battle of Alberta renews on Saturday night – with the Calgary Flames looking for the upset against their biggest rivals. Edmonton won six of ten meetings last season – outscoring the Flames 34 to 28.

The Calgary Flames come into this season with some questions. They lost Mark Giordano – the 2019 Norris Trophy winner – and replaced him with Nikita Zadarov, which is a notable downgrade. They did make a splash inking Blake Coleman – to give them a boost on offence but he is no Connor McDavid.

Flames Oilers Bet

The Oilers looked good for most of their win against the Canucks. Mike Smith played excellently stopping 36 of 38 shots. McDavid picked up two points (putting him on pace for 164 this season), while the offseason addition of Zach Hyman is already paying dividends with a powerplay goal.

Edmonton looks like they improved more than the Flames early in the season. Expect Edmonton to show their division rivals just that on Saturday night.

Toronto and Ottawa meet for the second game in a row, moving from Ottawa to Toronto for the rematch. The Ottawa Senators finally re-signed Brady Tkachuk – a positive move for the franchise’s present and future. However, the front office still has work to do if they want to compete against the Leafs and the other top dogs in the Atlantic Division on a nightly basis.

The Leafs looked good in their season opener against Montreal – despite Auston Matthews out recovering from surgery. The team got a power-play goal from Pierre Engvall, while Mitch Marner shook off an injury on Tuesday to contribute his first point of the season.

The Leafs look grittier this season. The addition of Nick Ritchie could factor into why. Or maybe this team is tired of being called soft. They also got a great performance from Jack Campbell on opening night, he is proving last season was not a fluke. Bet the Leafs to win.

Rangers look to Take Advantage of the Shorthanded Montreal Canadiens

While the New York Rangers looked flat in their season opener against the Washington Capitals, expectations are high in the Big Apple. Artemi Panarin is one of the offensive players in the NHL for the past three seasons and Adam Fox is the reigning Norris Trophy winner.

Montreal started the season with a loss to Toronto but has bigger concerns in the grand scheme of things. The team is missing many players to start the season – most importantly Carey Price – who is out indefinitely.

Excluding last year’s shortened season, the last two times Price failed to play 50 games, Montreal missed the playoffs. Jake Allen is fine – but he was only 11-12-5 last year for the Canadiens. He will win them some games but not as many as Carey Price – especially with the team missing Shea Weber on the blueline for the entire season.

CSBS Bets NHL Oct 16

We expect the Canadiens to have some earlier season struggles – and this game will be one of them. This game is also their third in four nights to start the year. While the same applied to the Rangers, the lack of depth on the Canadiens right now hurts them more.

Winnipeg looks to Rebound against the Sharks after Disastrous Season Opener

Hard to argue any Canadian team looked worse to start the season than the Winnipeg Jets. The Jets – starting on the road in California – played horrendously against the Ducks on Wednesday night – losing 4-1.

The Ducks expected to be a lottery team this season – did not look like it against the Jets. Maybe chalk it up to the Jets playing their first game outside of Canada since February 2020.

We expect a much better performance from the Jets against the San Jose Sharks. The Sharks – despite the star power on the blueline – cannot stop teams from scoring. They gave up the third most goals last season – and have arguably worse goaltending with Devan Dubnyk and Martin Jones gone and replaced by James Reimer.

The Jets goaltender – Connor Hellebuyck – is the reliable bet in this game. He has a career .929 save percentage against the Sharks in 12 games. The Sharks need to score (probably score a lot) to win this game. We do not expect them to get the chance to score enough against Hellebuyck.

The Canucks may Struggle in Early Back-to-Back Against Detroit

Watching the Canucks fight back to force overtime against Edmonton in the season opener was a promising outcome for a young team on the rise. However, the Canucks have a tough slate to start the year with six on the road before they open at home on October 26.

The Canucks get the Flyers on Friday night before heading to Detroit. While no one pegs Detroit as a contender this season, they are progressing well out of their rebuild and should be competitive on most nights (and this night is one of them). Take Detroit’s young core to best Vancouver’s emerging stars on Saturday.
