After the debacle that was the Super League, it is good to turn our attention to something else in the sport – the 2021 FA Cup Finals between Chelsea and Leicester City. But, even if England will watch the Finals, they are not done being angry.

Football fans across the United Kingdom will unite behind Leicester City. After Chelsea made the bullish move to join the Super League (along with five other EPL clubs), fans have openly voiced their disdain for those clubs.

While most of the hatred is directed at ownership – the fans still want to see one of the non-Big 6 clubs (Leicester City) win the Cup. Getting fan support is excellent, but if the roster on the field is not up to the task, it does not matter. Not the case with Leicester City this year.

Leicester already beat Chelsea this season – winning 2-0 back in January. Their second meeting this season is on May 19 – four days after the FA Cup Finals (that will be fun!)

Leicester City is not only beating Chelsea on the pitch this season, but they are also beating them in the English Premier League standings. Leicester City sits two points ahead of Chelsea this season, with four games left for each club. Both teams also have a +22 goal differential 34 matches into the 2020-21 EPL season.

The most significant advantage Chelsea has is their success against Leicester City in the FA Cup. Since March 2018, Chelsea is 2-3-2 against Leicester – with both wins in the FA Cup. However, this year’s team is superior to the 2018 and 2020 teams that Chelsea beat 2-1 and 1-0.

Overall, with the backing of a nation (and maybe a majority of the 21,000 fans allowed to attend the game), a talented roster, recent wins against Chelsea, and some attractive soccer betting odds to win – we are betting on Leicester City to win the match and their first FA Cup.

Pick: Leicester City (3.41) to Win the 2021 FA Cup Finals

FA Cup Finals Goals Total Prediction

Over 2.5

There is an argument for betting on either side of this wager. Seven of the last ten FA Cup Finals have totalled at least three goals – including two Chelsea losses to Arsenal by a score of 2-1 (2017 and 2020).

Conversely, these two teams have been brick walls on defence during the FA Cup tournament. In five matches each, the clubs have allowed three goals combined – and those include some tough opponents. The matches leading up to the final include a 1-0 victory by Chelsea over Manchester City and a 3-1 win by Leicester City against Manchester United.

To end the tossup, we need to consider each club’s offence this year. Both Cups have topped two goals in 60% of their FA Cup game. Leicester City has the third-best offence in the EPL season with 61 goals (1.79 per match). Chelsea ranks seventh in goals scored with 53 (1.56 per match). That totals 3.35 goals per match – pretty close to over 3.5 goals wager at 888Sport and Sports Interactions.

While we are not suggesting you bet over 3.5 goals, because of the goal-scoring abilities of both clubs and the 70% of recent Finals featuring three goals or more, we are betting over 2.5 goals in the FA Cup Finals.

Pick: Over 2.5 Goals in the Game (2.05)

Will There Be An Overtime?

Total Goals888 Sport888 SportTotal Goals
Over 2.5

There was a time when overtime in the FA Cup Finals was common. From 1985 to 1993, seven of the 11 games went to overtime (note this was during the era when a draw meant the clubs replayed the Cup Finals).

The frequency of overtime has declined over the last decade-plus. Only two of the previous 13 FA Cup Finals (15.4%) have gone to extra time, and none have ended in penalty kicks. The odds of 3.20 means the implied probability of overtime is 31.3%. That is not particularly good betting value for something so infrequent. We are betting there will be no overtime – unless the books move the soccer odds from 3.20 to at least 5.00.

Pick: No (1.30) There Will Not Be An Overtime in the FA Cup Finals
