Manchester City is Favoured, but are they the Best Bet?
After capturing their third title in four years, Manchester City opens the season as the favourites to win again but are they worth the value on their futures.
Last year was obviously strange for most sports – and if the 2021 EPL Champion was a random team, we might be able to chalk up the win to the season’s abnormalities and move on. But not Manchester City and the club they had and are bringing back.
Last season, Manchester City dominated the competition with a +51-goal differential, 22 goals better than second-place Manchester United. The team that did that is essentially back with the addition of Jack Grealish – one of the top attacking midfielders in the game. It is hard (but not impossible) to go against Man City winning again this season.
There is one reason to go against Manchester City and why we have more predictions below. How much does the club want to win the Champions League? The club has won everything in England and set records along the way, but they have not won the Champions League ever. It is something to consider.
Manchester United, Liverpool, and Chelsea – Best One to Dethrone Man City
Of the three clubs with the best chance of toppling Manchester City, we are going with the one that toppled them in the 2021 Champions League Finals – Chelsea. Chelsea’s roster is deep and talented. Players such as N’Golo Kante and Thiago Silva give the team excellent defence, while the continual development of Christian Pulisic provides the club with one of the best young players in the world.
The biggest thing for Chelsea is the deal to acquire Romelu Lukaku. Chelsea agreed to a club-record transfer fee of 115 million pounds to acquire the Belgian superstar. As long as his physical passes (it seems like it has as of August 10), Chelsea reunites with the super-gifted goal scorer and becomes an instant threat to Manchester City.
Best Underdog to Bet – Everton
Going into Matchday 7 during the 2020-21 EPL season, the club in the first place was Everton. After Matchday 15, Everton was sitting in second place. Then, everything went south. Everton picked up only eight wins over their final 23 games – falling down the table to tenth by the end of the season.
Still, there is reason to be optimistic in Liverpool. While Jordan Pickford looked terrible in a pre-season friendly against Manchester United, he is coming off a very impressive performance at the 2020 Euro Cop.
The club added a few solid pieces to put around Dominic Calvert-Lewin – who netted 16 goals in 33 games. The return of fans to Goodison Park should also help. Last season, Everton ranked fourth in away points with 37, but 15th in-home points with only 22. A return of the fans should help them improve their spot in the EPL this season, and although a bit of a long shot, they are the best underdog to bet to win in 2022.
Best Bet for Relegation

The two clubs just promoted are the favourites for relegation in 2022 – Norwich City, Watford FC, and Brentford FC – but we think the best value to bet will get relegated is Southampton.
Southampton was atrocious defensively last season, conceding 68 goals, second-most only to West Brom. The club was better offensively but lost their top goalscorer – Danny Ings 12 goals last season – to Aston Villa. Since the transfer was only two weeks before the season, the club did not have a chance to replace his scoring.
The club also lost keeper Angus Gunn – and did nothing to add to the position during the offseason. Even a decent manager Ralph Hassenhuttl will have a hard time keeping this team out of the bottom three this season.
