Toronto Hosts Hamilton in 2021 East Division Finals

  • Toronto Argonauts: 9-5 (6-7-1 ATS)
  • Hamilton Tiger-Cats: 9-6 (9-5-1 ATS)

Toronto hosts the Tiger-Cats in the East Division Finals – with the winner advancing to the 2021 Grey Cup on December 12 in Hamilton. Toronto opens as a small favourite on the best CFL betting lines over this East Division rival – but Hamilton looked impressive in a convincing win in the East-Semis against the Montreal Alouettes.

In our 2021 East Semi-Finals betting preview, we predicted Hamilton would rely on this stout defence to limit Montreal’s rushing attack. The unit did not disappoint. Hamilton’s defence smothered the league’s leading rusher – William Stanback – limiting the East Division’s MOP candidate to 29 rushing yards.

Against the Argonauts, the Tiger-Cats need to employ a more balanced defensive scheme. The Argonauts run a balanced offence. Argonaut’s quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson – who is turnover prone – can move the ball down the field. The Argos spread the ball around, with five players on their team with at least 300 yards receiving this season (and three guys with at 597 yards).

Toronto won three of four against Hamilton this season (both home games) – including a convincing 31-12 win on November 12. That was a must-win game for Hamilton – as the winner would likely go on to win the East Division.

Argos Played Great Football at Home this Season

What the Argos did to win that game was shutdown Jeremiah Masoli. Masoli had gone four games with no interceptions and at least a 68% completion rate. He went to Toronto and proceeded to toss two picks and barely complete 50% of his passes.

The win improved Toronto to 6-0 at home for the season. They dropped a meaningless Tuesday game to Edmonton to finish 6-1. Overall, though the Argonauts were the best home team in the CFL.

It is also important to note that the Tiger-Cats only win against Toronto – the Argonauts started Nick Arbuckle and not McLeod Bethel-Thompson. Since he returned from injury, he is 6-1 as the starter. If he had any more injury concerns this season, the three-plus weeks of rest from November 12 to December 5 should have him healthy for the East Finals. Bet the Toronto Argos to win.

Winnipeg Hosts the Saskatchewan Roughriders in West Finals Showdown

  • Winnipeg Blue Bombers: 11-3 (8-6 ATS)
  • Saskatchewan Roughriders: 10-5 (7-8 ATS)

The best 2021 CFL Playoffs betting lines have Winnipeg opening as a moderate favourite against the Roughriders. Winnipeg was the best team during the regular season. The Blue Bombers led the CFL in points scored and points allowed (even with punting on the last game of the season).

Saskatchewan struggled against Winnipeg this season. The Blue Bombers won both meetings convincingly – outscoring the Roughriders 56-17. Excluding the final game of the regular season (a meaningless game against Hamilton that featured backups), the two games were the only losses by Saskatchewan by more than one score.

Winnipeg had no glaring weaknesses this season. Their defence was superb in all facets of the game. They allowed only 6.4 yards per pass (best in the league) and sacked the quarterback 39 times (third in the league) this season. They tied with Saskatchewan for the most turnovers per game in the CFL this season.

The offence is just as impressive for Winnipeg. They ranked second in yards, first in points and down conversion rate. Quarterback Zach Collaros is the favourite to win MOP after a 20-6 TD-INT ratio and 3185 passing yards (in 13 games).

Saskatchewan’s Luck in West Semi-Finals Unlikely to Repeat this Week

Saskatchewan was lucky to advance to the West Finals. Their quarterback – Cody Fajardo – tossed four interceptions, while the defence allowed Calgary to score a late field goal to force overtime. The defence did force four turnovers. Without those four plays, it would be Calgary against Winnipeg this weekend.

Winnipeg does not make mistakes this season. The Blue Bombers +18 turnover ratio is the best in the league this season (for reference Calgary was -8 this season). You cannot expect Winnipeg to give you anything for free – meaning it is on your QB and playmakers to win the game.

The Blue Bombers shut down Cody Fajardo this season. In two starts, he was 34 for 56 with no touchdowns and four interceptions. The Roughriders failed to crack double digits in either game. It is hard to put faith in the Riders drawing up a game plan that can consistently score against Winnipeg. Bet on the Blue Bombers returning to the Grey Cup.
