Canada Can Win the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup
As young Canadian players such as Alphonso Davies and Cyle Larin only improve, Canada’s chances of winning the tournament are at an all-time high. While Canada won the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup, any Canadian soccer fan knows this team has more talent and depth them that roster. In fact, the overall squad is close to developing into Canada’s greatest men’s national team ever.
Canada is coming off a dominating performance in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. They swept their group stage opponents – outscoring them by 26 goals. They moved to the second round and beat Haiti twice by a 4-0 aggregate score. The wins give the young guys more experience and exposure to the pressure of playing for their national team.
Canada is in a group with the United States, Martinique, and the preliminary match seven winner. Of 12 countries competing for the final three spots in the tournament, the highest-ranked is Haiti – which Canada beat twice in June. They will be favoured as the better team no matter who fills the final spot in their group.
While the United States is a very talented team, Canada beat the United States 2-0 in October 2019 thanks to goals from Davies and Lucas Cavallini. While they may not beat the United States in the Group Stage, being in a group with them is beneficial.
They cannot meet again in the knockout stage until the 2021 Gold Cup Finals. If they can beat the US or get a draw and finish with a better goal-differential (the tiebreaker), they push the US to Mexico’s side of the bracket – giving Canada a pretty straightforward path to the Finals. Once in the Finals, anything is possible.
Pick: Canada (TBA) to Win the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup
The United States is a Powerhouse
Since Canada’s win in 2000, only two countries have won the CONCACAF Gold Cup – the United States and Mexico. Because of their successes, they enter the tournament as the favourites – and you need to figure out who is the better bet to win. For the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the United States is the better bet.
The United States recently beat Mexico in an exhilarating CONCACAF Nations League Finals. American superstar Christian Pulisic lifted the Americans to victory with an extra-time goal against Mexico. Going back to November 2019, the US squad is 11-1-1.
Pulisic – at only the age of 22 – is considered by many the most outstanding American male soccer player ever. He led the United States to the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup finals at only 20 – winning the top young player award and scoring three goals.
Pulisic is not the only reason we are taking the USA over Mexico in the battle of the behemoths. Guys like Weston McKennie and Gyasi Zardes are also talented goal scorers – capable of carrying the weight if Pulisic is having an off-night. Sergino Dest is superb on the ball and one of the most accurate passers in La Liga last season. Throw in Tyler Adams – a combative and creative midfielder – and this American squad is well ahead in its rebuilding processes.
Pick: United States (TBA) to Win the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup
Panama, the Best Underdog to Bet Will Win the 2021 Gold Cup
Although no one will say Panama is the best country in the CONCACAF, they have been competitive in the tournament every year since 2005. Since 2005, Panama has advanced to the Knock Stage every year. Panama has made two Finals – losing to the United States in 2005 and 2013. Panama also finished third in 2011 and 2015.
Panama’s group with Honduras, Qatar, and Grenada is winnable. Panama has success against Honduras – the best country in the group – since 2012. Panama is 3-5-2 against Honduras, with the two losses coming as international friendlies.
Qatar is a quality team – but invitees to the tournament have never won, and that includes Brazil (invited three times), who is superior to every CONCACAF nation. Grenada is the low-ranked country currently qualified for the tournament.
Panama’s soccer betting odds – once available – likely also offer better value than other mid-range underdogs. Combine with a winnable group and some previous success at the tournament, and we like Panama as an underdog at the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
