CFL Week 9 Betting Preview

In our CFL Week 9 picks, we cover the Friday night and Saturday games – including a duel between the best team and the leading candidate for league MOP.

It is officially the midpoint of the 2021 CFL season. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers enter the week as the top team in the CFL, and Hamilton and Toronto tied atop the East Division. In our CFL Week 9 betting preview, we cover the huge duel in Vancouver between the Lions and Blue Bombers, plus the two Saturday games – which features our best bet of the week.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers vs. BC Lions

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers – the top bet to win the Grey Cup – are well-rested off their bye week when they head to Vancouver to take on the Lions. The Lions – fresh off a close loss to the Roughriders – enter the game as the second highest-scoring team in the Canadian Football League.

Winnipeg’s pass defence this season is impenetrable. The Blue Bombers have ten interceptions and only allowed two passing touchdowns in seven games. They also allow the lowest yards per attempt this season at only 6.75.

The BC Lions have the best quarterback in the CFL this season. Mike Reilly leads the CFL with 1860 passing touchdowns and a 117.2 QB rating. He is averaging 9.3 yards per attempt and has only one interception on 199 passes. His improvements this season are why the Lions are much better than 2019 when they finished last in the West with a 5-13 record.

Reilly gives the Lions a chance in this game. Winnipeg offence is league average. They rank seventh in yards per game. They can move the ball but have the most success when their defence forces turnovers and gets them short fields. The Lions' biggest strength is holding teams to field goals.

The Lions have allowed only seven offensive touchdowns this season (fewest in the league), while opponents have attempted 26 field goals this season (most in the CFL). If Reilly can continue to play smart and avoid turning the ball over, the Lions can upset the Blue Bombers and move to 5-3 for the season.

Montreal Alouettes vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Montreal looks to get back in the win column when they play the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Saturday afternoon. The Tiger-Catts are the winners of four of their last five and sit atop the East Division tied with the Toronto Argonauts.

Concerns around the Hamilton QB room looked quashed for now. David Watford is 2-0 this season with 342 passing yards and 89 more on the ground. He is playing smart, mistake-free football, exactly what they need to stay afloat while Dane Evans recovers from injury.

Hamilton took care of business in the first meeting between the East rivals. Hamilton won by 17 in Montreal, holding the Alouettes to 249 yards. Montreal could not stop the run in the loss, as Hamilton marched down the field for 144 yards on only 20 carries (7.2 yards per attempt).

With Watford at quarterback, the Tiger-Cats have a superior rushing attack. Montreal – who gives up the second-most first downs by rushing the ball per game – will have a hard time stopping long drives from Hamilton. Everything is pointing towards a methodical win by Hamilton. We also love the under on this game, which is our bet of the week (once the market is open for betting)!

Saskatchewan Roughriders vs. Calgary Stampeders

Saskatchewan looks to stay one win behind the Winnipeg Blue Bombers when they play the underachieving Calgary Stampeders on Saturday. Saskatchewan’s (5-2) only two losses this season are against Winnipeg (where they scored only 17 points). The Roughriders have scored 30+ points in four of their five wins this season. This game is the first of three straight between Calgary and Saskatchewan.

Calgary’s struggles in 2021 are due to Bo Levi Mitchell. Mitchell – a former league MOP – is having a horrendous 2021. Mitchell has tossed only two touchdowns to seven interceptions and is 1-3 as the starter. It is forcing the Stampeders to turn to the unproven Jake Maier at quarterback. Maier’s outplayed Mitchell, with a 3-2 TD-INT ratio and over 1000 yards passing (three stats, five games).

Calgary’s secondary is also underwhelming in 2021. They are allowing the most passing yards in the CFL this season (271.1 yards per game) and have the fewest inceptions in the league (two). Those are concerning numbers against Roughriders QB Cody Fajardo. Tossing out his games against Winnipeg, Fajardo is a fringe MOP candidate and the best dual-threat quarterback in the NFL.

In five games (not including Winnipeg), Fajardo is averaging 252.4 yards per game with seven passing TDs and only three picks. He is also averaging 6.38 yards per rush this season with four rushing touchdowns.

Calgary is likely to win one of the three meetings against the Roughriders. However, it is hard to back them against a superior team until they fix the QB or situation in the secondary. Take the Roughriders to win the game.
