CFL Week 3 Betting Preview

Canadian Football League action continues with four games in Week 3 – including two undefeated facing off on Saturday night.

The Canadian Football League feels alive and well as we move into Week 3. There have been some early ups and downs – and unexpected performances, but overall the product on the field exceeds expectations (considering the year off and no preseason). Let’s get ready for the following slate of games with our CFL Week 3 betting preview.

Edmonton Elks vs. BC Lions

The BC Lions play their first home game 656 days when West Division rivals the Edmonton Elks come to town. After two games, the Lions look better than expected – with a tight loss to Saskatchewan Roughriders and an upset win against the Calgary Stampeders.

Edmonton looks to pick up their first win of the season following two lacklustre performances against the East Division. The Lions are the favourites to win the game and look to snap a three-game losing streak against Edmonton.

What we like to bet on this game is not who is going to win, but on the over/under. Despite not scoring a lot of points, both teams are moving the ball effectively. The Lions have 739 yards of passing offence this season and three touchdowns. Edmonton has the CFL’s leading rusher in 2021 – James Wilder – who has scampered for 174 yards in two games.

The teams are putting up the yardages – but settling for fields goals or turning the ball over. It is the type of trend that eventually bucks, and at least one side starts turning the yardage into touchdowns. We can see it in this game – especially with a low over/under line of 46.5 points.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers vs. Toronto Argonauts

The Toronto Argonauts plays their first game of the season when they welcome to town the reigning Grey Cup champions – the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The two played in Winnipeg in Week 2 – with the Blue Bombers defence stifled the Argos passing attack (two quarterbacks combined to go 20/39 for 166 yards and a pick).

It is the second outstanding defensive performance from the Blue Bombers – after in Week 1 they shut down the Tiger-Cats 19-6 (in a rematch of the 2019 Grey Cup). Winnipeg’s biggest strength this season is their passing defence. The secondary allows only a 55% completion percentage and 5.1 yards per attempt – both best in the CFL. They also have three picks and five sacks through two games.

The Argonauts need to lean more on running back John White in the rematch. White sliced and diced the Blue Bombers, picking up 111 yards on 12 carries (and a touchdown). If Toronto utilizes White more, it will open up play-action and passing lanes for their QBs and help them be much more effective than averaging 4.3 yards per attempt.

Can they beat Winnipeg is the bigger question? It was close in the first meeting, with the score 10-7 going into the fourth quarter. But Winnipeg has more talent and a better quarterback situation. I expect another close game and, like the Blue Bombers on the moneyline to move to 3-0.

Ottawa Redblacks vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders

Point SpreadSports InteractionSports InteractionPoint Spread
Ottawa +11.51.911.91Saskatchewan -11.5

Ottawa’s opening season win over the Edmonton Eskimo was one of the ugliest opening seasons wins of the last ten years. The Redblacks produced 127 yards of offence – barely over a quarter of the total offence posted by the Edmonton Elks (447 yards).

The defence was much better, holding Edmonton to four fields and picking them off three times. However, the Elks have yet to look good this season – losing 30-13 to Montreal in their second game of 2021. Against Saskatchewan, Ottawa will need to play much more efficiently on offence if they want a chance to move to 2-0.

This season, Saskatchewan has the highest-scoring offence in the Canadian Football League, averaging 31.5 points per game (or 27.5 if you remove non-offensive scores). While the Roughriders are scoring – they could be more effective – ranking only sixth in yards per play at 4.4. In comparison – when including sacks – the Redblacks only averaged 1.6 yards per play in their season opener.

The week off should help Ottawa fix their offence. There are apparent problems there – but it will not be as bad as in Week 1. And the defence did look good – aggressive and opportunistic. It may not be enough to carry Ottawa – but they should help keep the game within striking range.
