The Canada Open – men’s singles edition – gotten shaken up on Tuesday when Rafael Nadal announced his withdrawal from the event (due to a lingering foot issue, likely looking for more time to heal it before the 2021 US Open). Although Rafael Nadal was second to Daniil Medvedev on pre-tournament futures – the five-time winner is never someone to take lightly.
With him out, the field is weaker – which is beneficial for the Canadians left in the tournament. In fact, we could now see two Canadians advancing in the tournament and reaching the finals.

Two Canadians on opposite sides of the bracket – meaning they are on a crash course to play in the Finals. Will both guys make the Finals? A case can be made for each guy advancing to the Finals.
Denis Shapovalov to reach the Finals
Although he is the highest-ranked Canadian in the world, Denis Shapovalov’s path to the National Bank Open Finals is more complicated than fellow Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime. Shapovalov is on the same side of the bracket of top-seeded Daniil Medvedev – who is already on to the Round of 16.
But complicated does not mean impossible – and historically speaking, Shapovalov has outplayed Daniil Medvedev when they have faced each other. Shapovalov and Medvedev have played three times – all on hard court. Shapovalov is 2-1 all-time in those meetings, including a win in the First Round at the 2017 US Open (a three straight-set sweep).
The two have not played since 2018 – a win by Medvedev 6-3, 6-3 at the Japan Open. You can easily argue that since their last meeting, both players have improved. Medvedev is inching closing to his prime at 25 – but has not looked like the best player at Canada Open (using a rain delay to overcome Alexander Bublik). If he plays as he did in that match against Denis – we like the Canadians chances of making the Finals.
Felix Auger-Aliassime to Reach the Finals
Although he is not ranked as high as compatriot Denis Shapovalov – Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime may have an easier path to the finals. Originally, Felix Auger-Aliassime was on the same side of the bracket as Rafael Nadal. But Nadal withdrew, getting replaced last night by Feliciano Lopez. Lopez is a veteran of the sport – and does have a Grand Slam title (the 2016 French Open). However, he is older and not nearly as dangerous as Rafael Nadal.
Without Nadal, the rest of the bracket features good players – but no one you would be surprised to see lose to Auger-Aliassime. Casper Ruud is a looming opponent for Auger-Aliassime – but the two have split their four meetings, and Felix won the only time they played on the hardcourt.
Other potential opponents looming include Stefanos Tsitsipas, the highest-seeded player on the side of the bracket after Nadal withdrew. Tsitsipas is tough and on a four-game winning streak against Auger-Aliassime. These guys have played a lot in the last three years – dating back to a straight-sets win by Auger-Aliassime and the 2019 Indian Wells Tournament. They played some close games in their careers and if they both reach the quarter-finals, expect the same.
WTA Montreal Betting Picks
The women’s side of the tournament continues in Montreal – with Canadian star Bianca Andreescu already into the Round of 16. Is she able to continue in the tournament – and potentially repeat as champion, or are there other players we should be looking to bet to win the WTA Montreal title?

Already in the Round of 16, Bianca Andreescu is on a path to her second straight National Bank Open Finals (and potentially her second tournament win). The most formidable opponent on Bianca’s side is Elina Svitolina. Svitolina is a talented player – but she lost to Andreescu in their only head-to-head (at 2019 Indian Wells on hard court outdoors).
Simona Halep also remains on the same side of the bracket as Andreescu – and could be a thorn in her side. Halep beat Andreescu in their one meeting at the 2019 WTA Championships (hard surface).
Their match was quite close, with Halep winning 3-6, 7-6, 6-3. However, the path for Halep is trickier to get to the quarter-finals, with two opponents left. Even they do match up against – the home crowd advantage could sway it in favour of Bianca, setting her up for a chance at the Finals.
Aryna Sabalenka to Reach the Finals
There is not too much you need to say about Aryna Sabalenka – who is the top-seeded woman in the tournament and one of the top players on the WTA this season. Her bracket is quite favourable, especially after the fifth seed Garbine Muguruza (a potential semi-finals opponent for Sabalenka) was upset early in the tournament.
Another opponent in her path is Victoria Azarenka – who she beat on the hardcourt at the 2020 Ostrava 6-2, 6-2. Bet her to make the Finals and face Andreescu.
