Canada 2022 World Cup Qualifiers

Canada 2022 World Cup Qualifiers

Canada’s journal to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup on March 25 and 28 against Bermuda and the Cayman Islands. Find our betting picks on those matches plus thoughts on the other two Canada qualifiers here.

Canada kicks off their 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifications with two matches at the end of March – first against Bermuda on March 25, followed by the Cayman Islands on March 28. The remaining Canada 2022 World Cup qualifiers  – against Suriname and Aruba – are currently on the schedule for June 5 and June 8. Locations for the final two games of Group C CONCACAF qualifiers are TBA. Canada leads their group – ranking 73 on the FIFA rankings – and is the only country cracking the top-100.

First Qualification Match: Canada vs. Bermuda

Canada kicks off its quest to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup with a “home game” against Bermuda (and by home game, we mean at a site in Orlando where the Canadian National team has been holding training camp). While the border restrictions take away Canada’s home-field advantage (especially with unpredictable March weather) – this is the best Canadian roster in years – maybe ever, when they have their full contingent of guys.

Of the four countries grouped with Canada in the first round of qualifications, Bermuda is the country Canada has played the most.

Canada holds a slight edge all-time over Bermuda – with a 5-0-4 record. In the most recent meetings (since 2000), Canada holds a 3-0-0 edge over their CONCACAF counterpart. The most recent meeting between the two countries – an international friendly – ended with Canada on top 4-2. Eight of 18 players on Canada’s roster in that win are still members of the National Team in 2021. All four of the players – Jonathan Osorio, Tosaint Ricketts, Jay Chapman, and Anthony Jackson-Hamel – who scored in the win are still on the National Team.

Even without a few players likely not joining the club for the first leg (Cyle Larin and Alphonso Davies likely have to stay put for the first two games due to travel restrictions and quarantine requirements) – we cannot see Canada losing this match.

If they are without the services of some of their young stars, we are betting their first game ends in a draw. If somehow, in the next week, the players are able to make the game – we would switch our betting prediction to a Canada win.

Pick: Canada (TBA) to Draw against Bermuda

Second Qualification Match: Canada vs. The Cayman Islands

This game is the first time Canada and the Cayman Islands ever play each. The Cayman Islands is one of the newest countries in the CONCACAF to enter competitive play – and their results since 1994 have not been overly impressive. The Cayman Islands is 18-17-54 all-time – and that record only improved after picking up four wins in six matches in 2019.

The problem for believing the Cayman Islands is up and coming is those four victories include two against the U.S Virgin Islands (the 208th ranked country) and Saint Martin, who is not even eligible for the World Cup. Those wins in 2019 helped the Cayman Islands climb the FIFA rankings from 206 to 193 (where they rank as of February 2021).

The Cayman Islands are also in a similar situation to Canada – playing this match as the home team in Florida. However, unlike Canada in their match against Bermuda – Cayman Islands cannot balance out the loss of home pitch advantage by having a better roster. But when you rank 120 spots behind an opponent – losing the one advantage you have is costly.

Pick: Canada (TBA) to Beat the Cayman Islands

Early Thought on the Other Two Qualifiers

While there are no soccer betting odds available yet on Canada’s final two group stage matches – we have some thoughts on the games, nonetheless. Canada faces their toughest opponent – Suriname – in the second leg of Group C qualifications. But even Suriname ranks 70 spots behind Canada – and with a full roster hopefully by June, we expect Canada to beat Suriname.

Pick: Canada (TBA) to Beat Suriname

Aruba is the worst country in Group C, ranking 200 in the world. They have never played Canada – but they have struggled against similarly ranked and lower-ranked countries. Aruba record (as of March  18, 2021) is a paltry 12-21-62 with a goal differential of -126. We expect this to be the easiest win for Canada, with or without their entire roster.

Pick: Canada (TBA) to Beat Aruba
