Best Bets For Canada vs. Honduras World Cup Qualifier

CONCACAF World Cup qualifying picks right back up with Canada vs. Honduras on January 27 — the country atop the table vs. the country at the very bottom. It might seem like a mismatch, but there's still plenty of betting opportunity in this qualifier. Read on to get our best bets for Canada vs. Honduras for free!

Given the one versus worst matchup, you might assume the game's betting line is one-sided. Welp, that couldn't be further from the truth. Below is the current three-way moneyline:

Canada vs. Honduras Preview

We know what you're thinking, "why are the best Canada sportsbooks so down on Canada's chances?" There's an easy answer for that: Canada's superstar talent, Alphonso Davies, will NOT be playing. The Bayern Munich piece is suffering from mild myocarditis due to catching COVID. Despite the scariness of any heart condition, it's not expected to be a long-term problem. However, Davies is still expected to sit out a month — which would mean missing three qualifiers.

That's quite the blow for a Canada side in the middle of a resurgence. They haven't qualified for the World Cup since 1986, but are in the driver's seat to do so in 2022. Halfway through this final stage of CONCACAF qualifying, Canada is tops in the table with 16 points — one ahead of the United States and two ahead of Mexico and Panama. Only three teams are guaranteed a World Cup spot inside the region (a fourth can qualify with an additional playoff game) so there's little margin for error for the Canadians despite the current lead.

Without Davies, Canada's offence just isn't as deadly. In 35 career national games, the young phenom has contributed 10 goals and 15 assists thanks to his lightning-fast speed. Five of those goals have come in this qualifying stage, too. Therefore, the bookies really aren't wrong in the current betting lines set.

As for Honduras, it would take nothing short of a miracle for them to punch a ticket to Qatar. The team is winless in eight matches this round, but do have three ties at least. Beyond no Davies, the other thing Honduras has going for it entering the Canada match is that it'll take place on its home soil.

Honduras vs. Canada Betting Picks

We're going to be offering not one, not two, but three Honduras vs. Canada betting picks. Let's jump right into it:

Three-Way Moneyline

We should mention this game marks the second time both countries have met in this round of qualifiers. There was also a September 2 meeting — hosted in Canada — that ended in a 1-1 draw. In that match, Canada dominated the time of possession (64 percent to 36), but Honduras landed more shots on goal, 6 to 3. Both goals came courtesy of penalty shots.

That previous meeting featured Davies, but on that note, it's not like Canada is new to playing without its primary playmaker. It advanced to the semis of the 2021 Gold Cup with Davies out of the lineup and also blanked El Salvador 3-0 in qualifiers when Davies was injured. So there is a precedent for Canadian success without Davies.

Still, we're betting this game ends like the first one — a draw. Credit to Honduras in the first game for neutralizing Canada's attack. We expect them to use a similar gameplan once again, and this time, it'll be easier to execute with Davies missing. It's not a sexy choice, but bet on the draw here!

Spread

We're on record saying that the game is ending in a draw, therefore, that means the home team is covering the spread. There's not much else we need to say about Honduras that we haven't already — it's desperate to remain in qualifying contention and it played a good game versus Canada last time out. Heck, Honduras fought Columbia hard days ago in a friendly that ended in a 2-1 loss. This team isn't good, but are not complete pushover either.

Over/Under Goals

If this game is going to end in a draw, it's either going to be 0-0 or 1-1 — there's just not much offensive firepower on either side to warrant anything else. Our money says the 0-0 happens. Canada, without Davies, will use most of this match to get comfortable playing without him, which will stall the offence. Honduras, they've scored five goals in eight qualifying games, so there's not much offence to speak of. Take the under!
