Betting Picks For 2022 Miami Open

Fresh out of the Indian Wells Masters is the Miami Open. The competition has been a staple of both the ATP and WTA since 1985. This year’s Miami Open runs from March 21 to April 3. For a preview of what’s to come, plus our very own betting picks for the 2022 Miami Open, then keep reading this!

As of this publish time, futures betting odds are not available for the tournament — no matter the bracket. That’s because the playing field isn’t 100 percent set. A few players have recently withdrawn (more on that soon) and that’s changed the betting outlook of the entire event. Nonetheless, you can probably expect Canada’s best sportsbooks to favour the top-world-ranked tennis players to win out.

2022 Miami Open Preview

The Miami Open effectively marks the back-half of the “Sunshine Double” (the first half being the Indian Wells). Collectively, the two events are viewed as “important” despite not being Grand Slams. What makes the Miami Open “important” you ask? Good question, and that’s where we’ll begin our preview of the 2022 Miami Open.

Part of the reason is the Miami Open extends past a week, which is typically only reserved for Grand Slams. Due to the length of the tourney, the playing field is also larger. The singles bracket, for men and women, features 96 players — a big uptick from the usual 64 of smaller competitions. For the men, the Miami Open marks the annual beginning of the Tour Masters 1000 circuit, whereas this is the third such event for the women’s WTA 1000.

Since the stakes are higher at the Miami Open, the prizes follow suit too. Singles winners will score a whopping $1.2 million in prize money alone. Of course, bettors want their “piece of the pie” money-wise too, which is why we should cover who is pencilled to play at the Miami Open and who’s not.

Days ago, Rafael Nadal announced he’s pulling out of the Miami Open. The 21-time Grand Slam champ (most of all time) said transitioning to clay courts (which upcoming events will be) could be “dangerous” coming straight off of hard courts, which both the Indian Wells and Miami Open fall into. Joining Nadal on the no-go list is Novak Djokovic. Due to his unvaccinated status, the No. 1-ranked player is disallowed from entering the United States. If allowed, Djokovic would’ve likely had the top betting line to win given he’s claimed the Miami Open title a record-setting six times (Andre Agassi shares the record too).

The women’s bracket will also be missing its top-ranked player, Ashleigh Barty. She skipped the Sunshine Double entirely, citing a need to recover from her Australian Open championship. Like Djokovic, she would’ve been the odds-on favourite at the event since she’s the two-time reigning champion with wins in 2019 and 2021 (the pandemic cancelled the 2020 completion altogether).

Best Bets To Win Singles At 2022 Miami Open

Despite the absence of Nadal, Djokovic, and Barty, 71 of the top 75 ranked women and 65 of the top 75 ranked men are currently expected at the Miami Open. So the “best of the best” are still very much competing. With that said, which players are the best bets to win the singles event at the 2022 Miami Open? We have some ideas below:

Daniil Medvedev had a tournament to forget at the Indian Wells. He was promptly eliminated in the third round, losing his No. 1 ranking in the process (after holding it for all of three weeks). Some bettors might see that and run for the hills. Us? It’s a blip on the radar and we don’t think it shouldn’t deter you from betting on the Russian at the Miami Open.

When you zoom out, there’s still not a better hardcourt men’s player over the last year than Medvedev. His record on hard courts since March 2021 stands at an impressive 54-11. That winning percentage of 83 is just slightly above Alexander Zverev and Djokovic on the surface. This hot-streak also includes three titles on hard courts — the Open 13 Provence, the ATP Masters 1000, and of course, a Grand Slam title at the US Open. If anything, bowing out early at the Indian Masters just gave him the rest to come back and win in Miami.

Without defending champion Barty in the 2022 title picture, the women’s draw feels extra wide open. In moments of uncertainty like this, it’s never a bad idea to “ride someone’s momentum.” Among the top female performers at the Indian Wells, we’re latching onto Simona Halep for a bet here.

This year, the finally-healthy Halep is looking like her old self again — the one that occupied the No. 1 world ranking. She won the Melbourne Summer Set in January and hasn’t lost her streakiness since, making a deep run at the Indian Wells. The confidence she’s playing with gives us confidence as bettors too, hence the pick.
