2022 Players Championship Preview

So what makes the Players so damn special that it’s sometimes considered the “fifth major”? How about a $20 million pot of money? That’s the total purse available this time around, which makes it the richest tournament in all of PGA — even more so than one of the four majors. The winner will take home $3.6 million for themselves. Now, as we preview the 2022 Players Championship, who could that winner end up being?

Welp, we’ll tell you who it won’t be — Phil Mickelson nor Tiger Woods. Both Lefty and Tiger will not be participating at the Players for different reasons. Mickelson is on a playing sabbatical after his comments about the Saudi super league “ruffled feathers”, whereas Woods is still recovering from a near-fatal car wreck last year. Those two, along with Harris English, Steve Stricker, are the only qualified players not partaking in the event.

While casual bettors might be disappointed in Mickelson and Woods' absence, the seasoned bettors know that makes little difference at the famed Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. This event is one of the most unpredictable in the entire tour. Since 1974, only six players have won the Players more than once. None of those won in consecutive years — which doesn’t bode well for the reigning champion, Justin Thomas.

TPC Sawgrass’ unpredictability stems from its variety of winners. Power players like Rory McIlroy and Woods have won it before, but so have precision golfers like Webb Simpson and Matt Kuchar. Then, there are complete wildcard winners like Craig Perks (who never won any other event besides that 2002 surprise). As far as we can tell, the course doesn’t favour any particular type of player.

Best Bets To Win 2022 Players

You’d be wise to make multiple bets on golfers to win 2022 Players. As we said, this course is more unpredictable than normal. Plus, did you see the betting odds up top? They are steep enough where you can make up lost wagers with a winner. We mean, Jon Rahm, the favourite, has a fourteen-to-one betting line to win it all. We have three different bets we’re confident in at The Players and here they are:

Rory McIlroy

The 2019 winner might not have a lot of history on his side (the lack of repeat winners at this event), but he certainly has a strong track record at TPC Sawgrass. Outside of his outright win, he’s finished another three times in the top-10. Given McIlroy has played eight times here, that means half of his appearances at the Players have been championship-calibre. That’s the type of trend you should be looking for whilst betting so don’t be afraid to hammer McIlroy here.

Collin Morikawa

Only Rahm is ranked higher in the world than Morikawa is right now. The 25-year-old has played at the Players just once in his career — finishing a pedestrian 41st a year ago. But we like his chances a hell of a lot more this second go-around now that he’s more familiar with the course, and, well, the fact that he’s one of the best golfers of the past two years (a period in which he’s claimed to major titles). Morikawa has all the talent in the world, which makes him an easy betting choice here.

Daniel Berger

Admittedly, we’ve played it rather “safe” with our two previous picks to win. It’s why we wanted to be more “risk-on” with our third and final selection. Right now, there’s not a more “bang for your buck” bet than Daniel Berger at his 29.00 betting price. Like McIlroy, Berger has a solid past playing at TPC Sawgrass. He has a pair of top-10 finishes to his name here. A flyer bet on Berger is a perfect way to round out your wagering strategy for the Players.
