Betting Pick For 2022 NBA MVP To Make Right Now

With the All-Star break right around the corner, now feels like the perfect time to reevaluate NBA MVP bets — if you’ve already made one or even if you haven’t. In this article, we’re giving you the single best betting pick to win the 2022 NBA MVP. Read on for free betting advice.

Let’s begin with the current betting odds — which have changed dramatically over the past month (more on that soon). As of early February, the following five players have the best chances at being named regular season MVP, per Canada’s best sportsbooks:

New 2022 NBA MVP Co-Favorites Emerge

When the calendar turned to 2022, Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic were in the NBA MVP hunt — but we’re clear afterthoughts compared to Kevin Durant and Steph Curry. Oh, how the tables turned during the month of January. Now amid February, Embiid has a slight edge over Jokic in the 2022 MVP race while Curry and Durant are on the outside looking in. How did we get here? Welp, it took an unpredictable month of January to set the table.

Let’s begin with Embiid. Here are his averages last month: 34.0 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 5.1 assists in 15 games. That run includes a five-game streak of scoring at least 31 points and another 50-point outburst in a matchup where Embiid logged a mere 27 minutes. But perhaps most importantly of all, Embiid has revitalized the Sixers, who went 12-3 in January. The hot streak has helped Philadelphia claw their way up the East standings, where they’re currently two games behind first place.

Jokic’s month of January was also gaudy but in quintessential “Joker” fashion. The reigning MVP almost averaged a triple-double last month, finishing with a stat line of 26.6 points, 13.3 rebounds, and 9.0 assists in 16 games. Here again, those performances helped Denver in the win column. The Nuggets went 11-5 in January and are currently sixth in the Western Conference.

While Embiid and Jokic surged, Curry and Durant cratered. The case with Curry was particularly interesting: he had the worst shooting month of his career in January. He did drop 40 points (on 13-of-23 shooting) the last day of the month so maybe the historically-bad slump is done for, but it was a shocking stretch, to say the least. Durant, meanwhile, caught the injury bug again. His injury is expected to keep him sidelined for up to six weeks from when he sustained it, which all but kills his MVP chances going forward.

Best NBA MVP Bet For 2022

We really feel your answer to the next question should determine your NBA MVP bet for 2022: can Joel Embiid actually stay healthy? If you answer yes, then by all means, bet on him as the betting line favourite. Despite the Ben Simmons drama all-year long, Embiid has put the franchise on his back and been the most efficient player in the league. However, if you don't think Embiid is durable enough to last 30 or so more regular-season games, then you need to fade him betting-wise.

We fall into the latter group. Look, history says an Embiid injury is right around the corner. He's had a brilliant career, but never once since being drafted in 2014 has he logged more than 64 games in a single year. It's tough enough to win the NBA's most prestigious individual award, even more so when you can't be on the court for more than three-quarters of the year. Embiid is way too risky of a bet given his injury history.

If not Embiid, then who? To us, it really comes down to Jokic or Antetokounmpo for MVP. Amazingly, the two are the only players in the NBA currently averaging at least 25-plus points, 10-plus rebounds, and five-plus assists. While the individual stats are almost equal between the two, the difference is team success. In this category, it's not even close.

The Bucks are 34-21 right now and in second place out East. The Nuggets, meanwhile, are 29-24 and only one game ahead of the seventh seed in the West, which is only guaranteed a play-in playoff game. Simply put, Denver isn't good enough to justify Jokic as an MVP choice like a year ago. If Giannis helps Milwaukee stay atop the East — despite being reigning NBA champions with a target on their back daily — then it's his MVP title to lose. Cause of that, we're backing the "Greek Freak" to win his third MVP award.
