Max Verstappen or Lew Hamilton: Who Comes out Hot after the Summer Break?

The betting lines going into the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix have Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton in a deadlock to win the race and the 2021 Drivers Championship. The top two drivers in the world have dominated the F1 circuit in 2021 – winning nine of the 11 races. But which driver is the better bet to win the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix?

Lewis Hamilton is a Four-Time Winner at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps

Lewis Hamilton has four career wins at the Belgian Grand Prix. While for most drivers, four wins would be impressive – maybe even a career-best at a track, it is lower than many other tracks in his career. Hamilton has produced more wins at ten different events than the Belgian Grand Prix. There are three other races that Lewis has four wins in his career.

Conversely, Hamilton has the most retirements in his career at the Belgian Grand Prix. Four times in his career, he did not finish the race. However, none of the four have come since 2014 (and only one of the retirements was during his time driving with Mercedes. Hamilton has also not retired from a race since the Austria Grand Prix in 2018, so we should not overvalue those results.

Max Verstappen, a Grid Penalty, Could Cost Verstappen in Belgium

With issues to two motors since the French Grand Prix – Verstappen is at risk for a grid penalty at the Belgium Grand Prix. His team and Honda are working to patch the issues with his motor – in hopes of avoiding a start ten-place grid penalty that would seriously dash his hopes of winning the race.

Luckily, this issue is during the summer break, giving Verstappen's team has ample team to work on the problem. Is it enough time, though it remains unclear (as of August 17) if they can fix it? It does hold back our optimistic Verstappen can rebound this race – as he has only two points in his last two races.

It also means the betting value on Lewis Hamilton is at its best right now. If news breaks – even just days or hours before the race – Verstappen needs a new engine and will incur the penalty – Lewis Hamilton will quickly become a heavy favourite.

We also have yet to see Verstappen at his best in Belgium. Verstappen has not spoken too highly of the race – despite hailing from Belgium. Although he claims to go into the race this year “it is his favourite track,” he was quoted calling the track boring last year.

By boring, he means managing “tyres” – a strategy they used to perfection to win the 2021 French Grand Prix. But words or not – the uncertainty on the engine makes it a smarter wager – at least before we have official news – to bet on Lewis Hamilton to win the race.

Best Underdog to Bet will Win the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix

There is one considerable underdog we are eyeing to win the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix – Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo. Ricciardo had some good results at the Belgian Grand Prix. In 2014, Ricciardo picked up the third career win (and the season), winning the Belgian Grand Prix.

He finished second at the race in 2016 and added another podium with a third-place finish in 2017. Last year, Ricciardo managed the fastest lap of the race – helping him secure fourth overall.

If you want to take a shot on a guy – who could win the race, especially if something goes awry with Hamilton and Verstappen – Daniel Ricciardo is our favourite bet. You can strategically bet him with minimal units as well, as his 150.00 line to win means, you can put 10% of a unit and profit off a win if you bet Hamilton or Verstappen to win.
