Toronto Raptors Scottie Barnes make a Strong Case for Rookie of the Year

Anyone who had reservations about the Toronto Raptors taking Scottie Barnes with the fourth pick in the draft should now feel at ease. Because, man, this guy can ball. Barnes is not only a force on the defensive end of the court, but he is also a capable scorer with a much better shot than expected. Because of his play, the best Toronto Raptors NBA betting lines have Barnes as one of the favourites to win the award.

Barnes is second in scoring for rookies this season – averaging 15.1 points through his first 24 games. He also leads all rookies ranked top-10 in shot attempts with a 48.9% field goal percentage.

Barnes Raptors Rookie of the year

Barnes also leads all rookies by averaging 8.3 rebounds per game and recently grabbed a career-high 15 in a 90-87 Toronto win against the Knicks. Of course, what is arguably most impressive about Barnes is his consistency. Barnes has scored between 10 and 19 points in 70.83% of his career games and only less than ten points in two of his 24 games.

He is grabbing five to nine rebounds in 79.2% of his games this season and has at least a steal or block in 19 games this season. If the shot keeps developing, he could overtake Mobley as the best rookie this season – and has a great chance at winning 2022 NBA Rookie of the Year.

Evan Mobley is a Star in the Making. Can he Start his Career with ROTY?

While Scottie Barnes may be our favourite bet to win the award, he faces tough competition from Evan Mobley. Mobley tops the Raptors rising star in a few important statistical categories. Along with that and his teams’ performance, the best 2021-22 NBA betting lines have Mobley as the favourite to win NBA Rookie of the Year.

Mobley has a slight edge in win shares (2.3 vs. 2.1), blocks more shots (which is not surprising), and commits fewer turnovers. His play for the Cavaliers has the team as one of the biggest overachievers this season. With Mobley in the lineup, the Cavaliers are 16-8. Without him, they are 0-4 this season.

Mobley has the Cavaliers sitting in fifth place (as of December 12) – much better than expected this season. If he can keep his stats similar to Barnes (for example Barnes currently averaging 8.3 rebounds per game, 8.2 rebounds per game for Mobley), the Cavs being a playoff team could be the deciding factor in the vote.

Best Underdog Bet: Chris Duarte Underappreciated Season in Indiana

Lost in all the turmoil and potential decisions to reboot and rebuild the team is Chris Duarte’s rookie season for the Indiana Pacers. Duarte – who was born in Canada – is one of the oldest NBA rookies in recent memory, entering the league at 24.

As an older rookie, Duarte brings maturity and a little more polish to his game compared to some of the youngsters. That has helped him find a role on the Pacers’ offence and defence, while also continuing to develop.

While not leading any rookies in the main stat categories, he is not far off. His 13.3 points per game are good for sixth, while his 1.8 three-pointers made per game rank second. He is also only one of four rookies this season with a positive +/- (if you view that as an important statistic).

He has had some clutch moments as well – including a last-second game-tying three against the Los Angeles Lakers. If the Pacers start making moves, Duarte could see his playing time and shots increase. If they go up, he has a chance to lead rookies in points, three-pointers made and potentially steals. He is worth the value as the best underdog to win the 2022 Rookie of the Year.
