Canada Men’s 2022 World Cup First Round Qualifier

Canada Men’s 2022 World Cup First Round Qualifier

Canada continues its FIFA World Cup qualifiers when they take on Aruba and Suriname to finish up Round One. After dominating in their first two matches, Canada is in a good position to beat Suriname and Aruba to advance in the qualifiers.

Canada’s Men’s National Team returns to the pitch, looking to finish off their 2022 World Cup First Round Qualifiers with a 4-0-0 record. Canada started their qualifiers with a 5-1 win over Bermuda and followed it up with a record-setting performance by beating the Cayman Islands 11-0. Canada continues its quest to the 2022 FIFA World Cup with matches against Aruba on June 5 and Suriname on June 8.

Canada’s performance in their first two matches has pushed them up the FIFA rankings, from 73 in March to 70 at the end of May – Canada’s highest rankings since sitting 64 in 2012.

Canada vs. Aruba

Canada opens the second leg of Round One qualifiers against the lowest-ranked team in their group – number 208 Aruba. This match is the first between the two nations.

Canada is the favourite to beat Aruba – after they fall flat on their face in the first two games – losing both games and getting outscored 11-0 in the process. Aruba will play the Cayman Islands before they end with their final match against Canada. Since both clubs are already eliminated, this game will not tell us much going into the Canada-Aruba game. Even if Aruba shows up and has a Canada-Esque performance against the Cayman Islands (such as an 11-0 win), we would not bet on Aruba to beat Canada.

Pick: Canada (TBA) to Win the Game

Canada vs. Suriname

The final game of the CONCACAF Round One Group B Qualifiers against Suriname will be the toughest and most important test for Canada in this stage.

Suriname came out of the first two games unscathed, posting a 2-0-0 record with a +9-goal differential. With both countries looking to enter this game undefeated – this matchup will be a win and continue in the qualifiers or a lose and start preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Canada and Suriname have played once – a 2-1 win by Canada in 1977 (during the World Cup Qualifiers).

Canada outranks Suriname 136 to 70 in the FIFA Rankings, but Suriname is moving up the ranks after bottoming out in 2015 at 191 in the world. Even if Suriname is rising at a faster clip than Canada, Canada has the better players in this matchup.

Canada has gotten four goals out of Cyle Larin in the first two games (who was the lead scorer in the Besiktas in 2020-21). They have gotten three goals out of Lucas Cavallini, and “face of team Canada” Alphonso Davies has netted two goals. The best player for Suriname through the first two matches is Nigel Hasselbaink, with three goals.

I would not expect Canada to blow out Suriname like they have the other countries (and likely will do to Aruba), but I am betting on Canada to win the game. A play for the draw would also likely advance Canada on in the qualifiers – although I do not expect manager John Herdman to settle for the draw.

Pick: Canada (TBA) to Win the Game

Canada Odds to Win the 2022 FIFA World Cup

To Win 2022 FIFA World CupSports Interaction

Canada is not getting any love at Sports Interaction to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup – sitting tied with 19 other nations as the biggest underdog to win the tournament. While Canada is not a soccer powerhouse, the young and burgeoning stars on this team should have them a step up from the bottom of 2022 FIFA World Cup betting odds.

These odds do reflect Canada’s path to qualifying for the tournament. Once Canada finishes and advances from Round One, things only get more difficult. The Second Round takes place on June 12 and June 15 – with Canada advancing as the highest or second-highest ranked CONCACAF country. Canada just needs to win a home-and-away series versus another Group winner to advance to Round Three – where things get much more challenging for Canada.

However, that round of qualifying does not start until September – opening up the chances for Canada to play games at home with a crowd to motivate their young stars. The overall experience could make them a sneaky underdog to win the World Cup.

Canada to Qualify for the 2022 World Cup

Odds on Canada qualifying for the 2022 World Cup will reopen for betting after the Round One Group Stage wraps up on June 8. Canadian odds to make the tournament opened at 7.00 – but those odds will likely fluctuate after, as we have a better idea of what the CONCACAF looks like now, compared to last October/November.

As the seventh highest-ranked country in the CONCACAF, Canada has their best chance at winning one of the three guaranteed spots for the confederation – especially after watching them play much better against the United States and Mexico in recent years. Keep an eye open for qualification odds for Canada to reopen for betting during the summer – as they will offer good betting value to make the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
