2022 Pegasus World Cup Best Bets

The handicap division gets underway for real on Saturday, January 29 with the Pegasus World Cup (G1) at Gulfstream Park. The mile and an eighth race is the perfect distance to draw stars from both the Classic and one-mile divisions. It drew a smart field of nine to compete for a $3 million purse, one of the richest of the year!

The first Pegasus World Cup was contested in 2017, and the race took its name from the Pegasus and Dragon statue that soars a hundred feet over the Gulfstream racetrack. Superstars like Gun Runner and Arrogate have won the race already. This year, 2021 winner Knicks Go seeks to repeat; if he does, he will become the first-ever repeat Pegasus winner!

Pegasus World Cup Handicapping

Now that you know where to bet the race, it is time to start handicapping the 2022 Pegasus World Cup!

Pegasus World Cup Favourites

Horses at or near the top of the betting market typically win the Pegasus World Cup. In fact, out of the five runnings of the race, all five winners have either been the chalk or the second choice. In the 2022 Pegasus World Cup, two horses stand to take the majority of the wagering action: #1 Knicks Go and #4 Life Is Good.

Knicks Go, winner of the Pegasus and the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) last year, will have to send from the rail. He is fast, but he can run into trouble on rare occasions when he is forced to work too hard early by the rare horse who can match his speed early. In this race, he will run into such a horse in Life Is Good. And, if Knicks Go does not win, he often runs off the board.

Life Is Good has not run a bad race in six starts. He has dangerous miler speed: sharp enough to win a sprint, but classy enough to carry it two turns. These kinds of horses can jump up and win the Pegasus, and Life Is Good has pedigree appeal to stretch out to the mile and an eighth. He also drew better than Knicks Go, putting him in the driver’s seat for this rich race.

Pegasus World Cup Value Plays

The exotics are the right place to look for price horses in the Pegasus World Cup. After all, though only shorter-priced horses have won the race, at least one horse at 10/1 or above has run into the trifecta in every edition of the Pegasus. Some years, two such longshots have raced their ways into the top three. So, it pays to find those exotic contenders.

#8 Endorsed has proven that he likes Gulfstream Park, with money finishes in all four starts over the course. Though most of his recent work has come in sprint races, both of his mile and eighth tries have resulted in stakes placings at the classy Saratoga meet. With tactical speed and that ability to stretch out, Endorsed should be able to work a good trip, and is the most interesting exotics longshot.

#3 Stilleto Boy was a 16/1 surprise when he won the Iowa Derby last year, but has since hit the board in a pair of Grade 1 races in Southern California. Those efforts include a second-place finish in the Awesome Again (G1), a race at the same mile and an eighth distance as the Pegasus. His consistency, ability to run well at different tracks, and tactical speed all suggest he can run another strong effort this time out.

#5 Empty Tomb has yet to win at a mile and an eighth, but he has been a reliable part of the exotics in this kind of trip: in seven tries at a mile and an eighth, he has run second or third five times. Though he is not quite as fast as the favourites early, he should be close up, and high-percentage Gulfstream Park jockey Paco Lopez should give him a good trip.
