Game of the Week Preview - Is it Time to Take the Carolina Panthers Seriously?

Home Team unibet unibet Road Team

Carolina Panthers -2.5

-116 -104 Chicago Bears +2.5

With a new coach and quarterback, the 2020 NFL season was supposed to be a rebuilding one for the Carolina Panthers. However, after rattling off three wins in a row to move to a tie for the NFC's final Wild Card spot. They have had all this success, despite losing running back Christian McCaffrey to injury after two games.

Their Week 6 opponent is the 4-1 Chicago Bears. The Panthers open as 2.5-point favourites against the Bears, making it the first time they are favoured this season.

The Panthers have done many nice things this season, making us believe they can beat the 4-1 Bears. They moved the ball well, ranking sixth in passing yards per game, sixth in third-down conversion percentage and sixth in longest average drive – 39.2 yards per drive – in the NFL.

They will need their offence to work efficiently if they are to have success against the Bears defence. The Bears have the fourth-best scoring defence in the NFL. They also have done a great job limiting teams to a passing touchdown on 2.1% of pass attempts – best in the league.

Still, even with the Bears defence playing well and Foles showing some flashes in two and a half games, we like the Panthers. The Bears' success – on defence – has been against older pocket passing quarterbacks and the New York Giants. They have not yet needed to contain a quarterback who can make plays with his legs.

While Bridgewater is not the top scrambling quarterback in the league, he has made plays in Matt Rhule's system, averaging 4.9 yards per carry and rushing for an 18-yard touchdown. We like Rhule to get creative against the Bears and lead them to a fourth straight win.

Pick: Carolina Panthers (-2.5) -116

Underdogs We Like in Week 6

New York Giants -3.0

-105 -115 Washington Football Team +3.0

Even if the Giants put up points against the Cowboys (everybody does) and they are the "home team," they do not deserve to be favourites against anyone. Now, before we suggest you bet heavily on the Washington Football Team, we want to preface, we only like them if Kyle Allen plays.

Allen looked impressive against the Los Angeles Rams, who are a top-three team in the NFC this season. Allen went 9/13 with 74 yards and a rushing touchdown – before leaving the game due to injury.

Washington can also get pressure on the quarterback. The Giants QB is prone to mistakes and turnovers, especially under pressure. If the Washington defence can get the offence a few short fields, Allen should not have much trouble converting those drives into points and the team's second win of the season.

Pick: Washington Football Team (+3.0) -115

The Jaguars have already won a game at home as underdogs this season, and they have the chance to do it again this week against the Detroit Lions. The Lions have a terrible defence. They allow a league-high 170.3 yards per game rushing. They are also one of five NFL teams to allow touchdown passes on 7.0% or higher of pass attempts.

The Jaguars, although 1-4, have played competitive football this season. The Jags quarterback, Gardner Minshaw, has a passer rater of at least 92.7 in four of five games this season. He also has at least two touchdowns in four of his five games. For the season, Minshaw has a higher competition percentage and quarterback rating than Matthew Stafford.

We like a frisky Jaguars team over a Lions team that has a single over the 16 weeks.

Pick: Jacksonville Jaguars (+3.5) -113

Favourites We Like in Week 6

Tampa Bay Buccaneers +2.5

-110 -110 Green Bay Packers+2.5

Rodgers versus Brady. This game was definitely circled on the calendar of many NFL fans when the schedule was released. Before the season, some (not us) were expecting a regression by the Packers. However, with a 4-0 record and scoring at a record pace, the Green Bay Packers could be the best team in the NFL.

The Buccaneers have looked promising at times. However, mental blunders – the most penalties in the NFL and ranking in the bottom third for turnovers – have cost them games against inferior offences.

Rodgers is a master of taking advantage of an opponent's mistakes, and after watching the Bucs for five weeks, we do not think they can clean up their mistakes enough to avoid losing to Rodgers in Week 6.

Pick: Green Bay Packers (-2.5) -110

San Francisco 49ers +3.5

-110 -110 Los Angeles Rams -3.5

What the hell happened to the 49ers in Week 5. The reigning NFC champs got absolutely dismantled at home by the Miami Dolphins. The 49ers face a much better team this week in the Rams, and after watching both teams last week, it is hard to have faith in the 49ers right now.

The Rams are playing well on both sides of the ball. The offensive line is playing much better this year, helping the Rams rank seventh in rushing and making the play-action spread offence look much better. On the other side of the ball is Aaron Donald. Donald may be the best player in all of football and leads the league with 7.5 sacks through five games. For all pace guy, that is a record-breaking 24 over a full season.

The 49ers are just dealing with too many injuries this season. They should fix some of the poor play from Week 5, but without their full complement of defensive linemen and running backs, they are outclassed by the Rams.

Pick: Los Angeles Rams -3.5 (-110)
