Mayweather vs McGregor Preview
After months of prefight promotion, plenty of chippyness and profanity and a ton of arguments, the much anticipated Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight is finally here.
For those not familiar with the fight, the idea of McGregor v. Mayfeather started as a war of words between the two. Many believed the fight may never happen. After a long negotiation and plenty of planning the two parties finally came to an agreement for a fight to take place on August 26 in Las Vegas. The event is scheduled to start at 9:00 PM EST, with the main event likely starting around 11:30 PM EST to 12:00 AM, depending on how long the undercard fights will last.
Once the fight was set, the early consensus was Mayweather would handily win. McGregor has boxing background, but is a MMA fighter meaning he trained in many different disciplines instead of focusing just on boxing. Most early odds had McGregor at +1000 or greater.
As the fight got closer the odds began to shift. Part of this is due to so many people betting on McGregor because of the payout potential, part of the shift is due to the fact McGregor looks to be improving and may actually have a chance at winning.
There is a lot to bet on in this fight, from standard boxing bets like method and round of victory to the odder prop bets like whether either fighter will need to get naked at the weigh-in to make weight. Going through the many options and looking at the odds, three wagers on Saturday night make the most sense. One is a winner/win by bet, one is an over/under bet on the length is the fight and the last bet is a prop bet on total viewers.

Between Floyd Mayweather’s elusive fighting style and Conor McGregor’s likely approach to the fight, expect this fight to last for a while. Unless, McGregor lands a knockout blow in the first round or two, the expectation is for Mayweather to try and win the majority of the rounds with points so he can win the fight by decision. Even though Mayweather has 26 knockouts in his boxing career, he is older now and a more technical fighter than a brawler with a knockout punch. Expect a long fight with each fighter changing up strategy as the rounds progress.

In a summer devoid of big sporting events – no World Cup soccer or Summer Olympics – the world has been looking for something to sink its teeth into and they have been given Mayweather vs. McGregor. Still, this event has been a consistent part of the sporting world news and the hype for the event is crazy. In addition to the main event, the pay-per-view has three undercard fights and three more fights happen on the preliminary card, which is not a part of the pay-per-view.
The biggest fight of the undercard is undefated Gervonta Davis (18-0) vs. Francisco Fonseca for the IBF super featherweight title. Gervonta Davis, who is considered Mayweather’s protégé, is an overwhelming favourite and should retain his championship against Francisco Fonseca.
The other interesting fight on the undercard is between WBA light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly and WBC super middleweight champion, Badou Jack. Badou Jack dropped down a weight class, but is the favourite in the match with odds circling around -425. Both fighters are skilled in their own rights and many expect this match to be very close, with either fighter having a good chance at winning, making Nathan Cleverly (around +300) a good pick.
